  1. I couldn't find a specific topic on this.

I've just signed up at last.fm and I'm now scrobbling from iTunes and I'm enjoying the novelty of it at the moment.

I've fired off a couple of questions to Bregt on the subject of getting my profile to talk and update with my recent listening history in iTunes.

Anyone have any good tips to pass on?

Don't forget to subscribe to the MainTitles group. It's still very small, but interesting to see some extra statistics. It's maintained by Scorefande (who is Antineutrino here)
    http://www.last.fm/group/MainTitles.net?ac=maintitles

I changed the number of tracks, shown on the profile, to 10.

  2. Q: If you only have certain folders checked on your PC any tracks played in iTunes not located in a checked folder will not appear in your recently played list on last.fm - is my understanding of how it works correct?

  3. And I can now listen to streaming film music on my phone via their radio! For free!

What is last.fm really? I know it's been around for years but never had the time to look it up. And Bregt is a huge fan too. What does it do?
Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders.

Yes, that was the case some years ago, but that changed and the time to listen for free is limited I think? But it's cheap to subscribe though. About 3EUR. a month.

No, I think it's still free in the UK?

It's another social network app, really: it "scrobbles" (their term) the music you play through different media players (mainly Windows Media Player, Winamp and iTunes, although I gather VLC player now supports posting to) and posts it to your profile on a website, keeping stats on what you play, how often you play it, offering compatibility checks with other users, the option to rate your tracks and suggestions for new artists.

I only use it because I kinda like the stats.
Its main intended use (I think) was to offer an online library so you could stream your music -all the music you've "scrobbled"- online. AN excellent idea and great business model, but with a 160 GB mp3 player I never felt the need to pursue that.

It shouldn't...but especially with iTunes I find that doesn't work.
This function WILL work when playing directly from files (i.e. clicking a file from such an exempt folder to play in whatever music player is your standard).

It's just that not all the tracks I play don't always appear in my recently played list. I'm just playing about with the settings at the moment to see how it works.

The best part of it I think is the fact that Bregt rigged it so you can see the last played tracks in anyone's profile over here at MT.
That, I think, is ace, and the real reason I'm using it. biggrin

For what it's worth: with iTunes, especially when there is a a massive bunch of tracks in the "to-post" queue (for example when I haven't synchronised my iPod for a week or so), some tracks will seemingly go AWOL.
They're not: they get scrobbled later on, maybe as late as four or five syncs later, but they will.

Again: for me this is ONLY an issue with delayed scrobbling.
Whenever I play "live" (by clicking a track in iTunes or Winamp or VLC Player) it scrobbles immediately.
The issue you describe only happens to me when syncing my iPod.

I created an account YEARS ago, because I thought it was cool with streaming music for free.

Of course, it became totally superflous with the advent of Spotify (or sites such as musicme.com), which had whole albums for streaming instead of just individual tracks, like last.fm. Even though you had to endure a commercial once in a while in the free subscription.

What last.fm had, though, which was kinda cool - was that it played tracks in the same style. So if you typed in Williams, you got maybe a Williams track first, but then the next was Broughton or something which you hadn't heard before. Great way to discover new music close to your taste.

I don't use last.fm anymore. My music playing alternates between Spotify (especially for albums I do not own) and my own collection in iTunes.

SPOTIFY IS THE WAY TO GO!

It's only what everyone (every young person, at least) uses to play their music here in Norway. I was convinced that it had at least spread to the whole of Europe by now (it's been out for several years), but maybe I was wrong?

I know Spotify. I thought it was only free for Scandinavian countries?

www.grooveshark.com is what I mostly use. It's probably not as legal as Spotify, and not as extensive...

Not into mp3 players ipod and stuff. Portable music isn't really my field. Spotify is the one that listens to a song and tells you which song is it?

In Grooveshark you just search for an album and it lets you stream it. Mostly quality is excellent. It's not a Flash application anymore either, fully HTML!

No, that's Shazaam (I think it's called), an app for iPhone. Spotify is just a program with a database of 10 million tracks, and you can play them all for free in streaming format. Lots and lots of soundtracks too. If you subscribe, you lose the occasional ad that breaks up the tracks too.

I KNOW that it's spread outside Scandinavia (it was originally an English invention), but not sure how far.

  7. I notice that every now and then one of my more obscure tracks (happened on a track from Kenji Kawai's Guardian of the Sacred Spirit) don't appear on my "recently listened tracks" list. Anyone any idea why that is?

  8. Maybe it's shorter than 30 seconds?

I'm not sure about that. I'll let you know when "Staccato Beat" from Barry Gray's Captain Scarlet plays (coming in at 4 seconds in length). Or one of the other 35+ tracks under 30 seconds.

But I just had another one go unrecorded. And it's another score from Japan: a track from Taro Iwashiro's The Sinking of Japan.

I thought that last.fm collected the information on what you were listening to. But it seems to take the information and compare it with some database they have and then use this information held in their own database.

Are they properly tagged Alan? Tracks which are incorrectly (or not) tagged, don't get noticed, or when there's some sort of odd translation full of weird characters.

Normally, when you listen to something that Last.fm has not yet scrobbled, it should be added to your profile.
