  1. Just settling down to watch the final ever shuttle landing. Due to touch down at 10:56:58 British Summer Time (give or take).

  2. Well, the space shuttle programme is now history. Placing Hubble Space Telescope in orbit and building International Space Station probably greatest achievements.

A sign of the times though - much talk now of the 4,000+ jobs lost from tomorrow.

Come on, at least spend today celebrating the shuttle's achievements.

Sorry, but I couldn't help but smile when I saw the photo: the tail end of the blue tit sticking out.

Good that "eat" was placed in quotation marks. I would imagine that the blue tit say trapped flies in the plant, thought it was an easy meal, slipped and drowned in the fluid and was then digested. The plant had very little to do with it. Now if the plant had have been a triffid then that would have been a different story!

But thanks for the link. It was interesting to read.

  4. Cloud for most of the night. A few breaks in the cloud later but I had gone to bed by then. The full moon would not have been good for viewing.

It looked like it would be a clear night at first with the full moon clearly visible but it quickly clouded over.

If the clouds could have obscured only the moon that would have been great.

How can they swallow a bird that's still alive...?

    Anyway.
I told before that my son joined the observatory club and this saturday they will go some place outside the city where it's dark to see the Draconid meteor shower. I will stay as well because I've never seen it before.

    http://space-env.esa.int/index.php/ESA- … hower.html

There's a good chance it will be cancelled though because the weather looks really bad. That sucks. Frustrating to know there's someting pretty going on, above all those clouds.
  5. It is my experience that, whenever there's something interesting to see in the sky, the weather is usually cloudy.

    We saw them!

We didn't go to the meeting and at the first peak (19:09) it was clouded and rainy. Then at about 21:30, a bit before the second peak (21:57) we were at home and there were some clear parts in the sky. We took out some chairs and watched.

The first one I saw was very bright and yellowish, almost like actual fireworks!
Later on we saw about ten more, but less bright. Just how you would expect them: a white fast thing in the sky and before you know it, it's gone.
  6. We had complete cloud cover all evening. sad

I was out about 21:45. Didn't see a single one. slant Perhaps there was too much light pollution in my area.

It's strange, because I've seen many shooting stars in my life without even trying. But when I finally go out in what's supposed to be the greatest meteor shower for decades I see zilch.
