    I'm looking forward to the data that it should eventually collect. This is exciting for a broad range of the sciences, not least the potential biochemical information.

    I'm glad my own movie Armageddon inspired scientist to go for their dreams as well. However, I think this mission is overrated. Where's the revenue in all this? (My revenue was over 500 million dollars!) Where's the robot now? What is it doing? All lost money I think.

    Anyone able to watch the solar eclipse that is happening over Northern Europe currently? Unfortunately it's very misty here in Gent. No chance of seeing anything, though it got a lot darker over the past hour. Next partial eclipse is somewhere in 2021. slant

  17. We had some high cloud which turned out to be fortunate for photos. I'll put a few on Facebook later.

    It's always a wondrous sight seeing an eclipse, even 'only' a partial eclipse. Would love to see a totality but not enough to go hunting for one. Maybe the next time one happens in North Wales...?

  18. Beautiful blue skies here in Berlin fortunately, I went with some friends to the old Tempelhof airport (which is a public park now) and we looked at it there and had a picnic. Some other folks there had squares of dark glass through which we could observe it better. I'd say at best there was about 60% of the sun covered, and it looked a bit like a Cheshire cat smile smile . I was more looking forward to seeing how/whether the daylight would dim, and I'd say it did a little, but not nearly as much as I'd have thought. It looked a bit like the weak sunlight you'd expect to see in January. If I hadn't known about the eclipse I doubt I'd have noticed it at all.
  19. Our eyes are very sensitive to changes in light levels and so we tend to compensate for changes in light levels. We had about 90% coverage and it did get significantly dimmer and cooler when the coverage of the sun was at a maximum.

  20. About 70% in Siegen/Germany. But it was all foggy and nobody noticed a thing. I showed the eclipse my young students via livestream on my mobile.

  21. I did notice it get cooler, now that you mention it. I was surprised - didn't think the temperature would react that quickly, given that peak sunlight (noon) and peak temperature (2-3ish) have so much of a delay.

    Here in The Netherlands the sky was grey and overcast.
    It may have been my imagination, but it seemed to get a little bit greyer before it got back to being grey and overcast.

    Perhaps the sudden change in temperature is due to changes in direct heating from the sun's rays but the delayed warming peak is due to heat accumulation due to warming of the ground and air?
