It's a quickie, but.... last month, Aaron Zigman took up his baton and conducted the score to the highly anticipated Sex and the City: The Movie. We've got some snaps from the session so come take a look!

The Proposal, a romantic comedy starring Sandra Bullock, Ryan Reynolds and Mary Steenburgen, gets an original score by Aaron Zigman (The Notebook, Sex and the City, Alpha Dog). The film, presenting a story about a boss who forces her young assistant to marry her in order to keep her Visa status in the U.S., is directed by Anne Fletcher, a choreographer/director who previously worked with Zigman on Step Up.

AWARD-WINNING COMPOSER
AARON ZIGMAN
SCORES
"Flash of Geniusâ€
Film released by Universal Pictures on October 3rd
(Los Angeles, CA) Award-winning composer Aaron Zigman scores “Flash of Genius,†Marc Abraham’s (producer of “Children of Men†and “The Hurricaneâ€) directorial debut chronicling the true story of a man’s battle against the U.S. auto industry. Greg Kinnear stars as Robert Kearns, the university professor who sues Detroit automakers after they fail to give him credit as inventor of the intermittent windshield wiper. Lauren Graham (“Gilmore Girlsâ€) and Alan Alda (“The Aviatorâ€) co-star as Kearns’ wife and lawyer. Zigman recorded parts of the score in London with members of the London Symphony Orchestra and recorded an additional chamber piece with Los Angeles Symphony Orchestra. The soundtrack is available on Varese Sarabande.
For his breathtaking score to “Flash of Genius,†Zigman relies heavily on string instruments to convey the urgency Kearns feels as his obsession with his case grows. The combination of Zigman’s melodic piano and flute themes with soulful blues-based tracks complements the emotional ups and downs throughout the film.
Zigman has built a solid musical reputation as a leading songwriter, producer, arranger and musician. Zigman has successfully traversed from pop to classical to film music. His credits include producing and arranging for music icons including Natalie Cole, Tina Turner, Seal, John Legend and Christina Aguilera, and numerous symphonic pieces including a tribute to former Israeli Prime Minister Itzhak Rabin. With “Flash of Genius,†Zigman adds yet another genre to an already diverse range of credits, including memorable scores from the romantic film “The Notebook†and urban edginess in “Alpha Dog.†Zigman’s talent and diversity has moved him to the top rank of film composers in a few years.
Most recently, Zigman scored “Sex and the City: The Movie.†His scores last year included “Bridge to Terabithia,†“Martian Child,†“Why Did I Get Married?,†“The Jane Austen Book Club,†“Pride†and “Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium.†Aaron Zigman has received accolades for his work including an Emmy and Film Music Awards.

I did notice this myself too.
Maybe they thought the film didn't have any shot at getting anything. Maybe they were right. -

My review of Zigman and Desplat's Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium, copied and pasted right out of my score reviews blog:
" A magical, soaring score that will hold your heart captive and not let go "
The score to Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium threw me for a loop. A big loop. What I thought was going to be a mediocre listen turned out to be a charming, emotionally moving, vast, mysterious, and comical score. Composed as a collaboration between Aaron Zigman and Alexandre Desplat, this score isn't one you'll want to miss.
Though it has a comical, Monsters, Inc.-like opening (Main Title), the soundtrack presents an incredible flurry of motifs, incredibly emotional, and tugging at the heartstrings from all angles. The duo did an excellent job holding a sense of unity and consistency throughout the work.
Regardless of how many styles of writing you hear in this score, the duo manage to tie it all together with unmistakeable motifs, one of which tends to stand out to me a great deal: the gorgeous, sweeping melody often heard on strings, piano, or brass (Mahoney's Debut, The Flight of Magorium, Dancing, Finale). Such a theme is not to be easily forgotten, at least not by me.
Overall, Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium is an excellent buy, a wonderful addition to a score fan's library, and one that you will return to time and time again. Do not believe your first impressions, or you will be deceived. This is a children's film, but an adults' score. This is pure, unadulterated, raw emotional intensity that is not to be found in too many of today's scores. And aside from that, it's a heck of a lot of fun. Highly recommended. -
