Having my first experience with him. It is a CD of Jason and the Argonauts. Completely different from Herrmann.

    listen to more classical music!
  1. It certainly is. I remember emailing Boswell after hearing some of his music in the film as I enjoyed it so much. This was before it had been released. But I have to say I was quite disappointed once I had heard the CD: it didn't really sustain my interest much.

  2. I was just listening to my favorite Boswell piece: "Meeting Jenny" from COUSIN BETTE, an album that I don't really enjoy except for that wonderful track. That album is my only exposure to the man's music.

My first introduction to him was the underrated sci fi from around 1990 called HARDWARE, with a robot baddie that resembled TERMINATOR to a tee. Mark-13, I believe it was called, culled from a bible quote. There was some pretty hefty use of existing music in it too -- from Public Image Ltd. to Ministry to the gobsmackingly beautiful "Stabat Mater" by Rossini. Loved that film and score.

Boswell has also been associated with a few Norwegian films, like FREE JIMMY and ROVDYR.

He's one of those composers I've always wanted to check out more, but never got around to.
    I am extremely serious.

I notice someone suggested Lord of Illusions. Never heard of it.

I almost bought Lord of Illusions once, it had a £1.99 price label on it but when I took it to the counter I was told it was mistakenly priced and I couldn't have it at the price labelled, I'd have asked to see the manager but I was in too much of a rush, mentioned something about not honouring the customer and left.

  7. I am told that they were obliged to sell it at the displayed price. Their mistake.

And I've long been aware of that, like I said, I just didn't have time to wait and see the manager, I was well fuming though.

As you should be. It's the store's fault, and you have the right to buy at the advertised price, faulty or not. I've gotten a couple of soundtracks that way (erroneously put in the cut-out bin, for example), and there was nothing the clerk could do about it.

  8. Did you tell them how much it was actually worth?

  9. I thought you might all get a kick out of some of the interview that was put up of an interview with Boswell a few years ago; here is an excerpt:

"Of all the people I have worked with, Dario remains the craziest, most unbalanced person I have ever met! It was quite extraordinary. The very first scene of the very first movie I ever scored was of a girl being chased by a psychopath down a tunnel, and suddenly she falls into this pit filled with body parts, and all sorts of gunk and disgusting things, and I seem to remember there was some kind of beheading in there too. I had no idea what to do, so I used some violin harmonics and the sound of a plectrum being scraped down the strings of a guitar - the film music equivalent of fingernails down a blackboard, and it was horrible to listen to. I remember Dario came in and I was very nervous, but he sat down and watched this scene and listened to my music, and when it was finished he leaned back and said (in a thick Italian accent) “Is beautiful!” (laughs).
All the time he was watching this he had been playing with something in his hand, which he dropped on the floor. When I picked it up to give it back to him and I saw that it was a tiny, naked plastic doll. He grabbed it from my hand and held it up like a crucifix, and started backing out of the room, waving this doll at me and shouting “Good luck! Good luck!” And that was my first day on the job (laughs)."

  10. Wow, that's a blast from the past! I remember doing that interview in Simon's living room at his old house in Kentish Town in London. His cats were all hyped up on something and kept trying to leap on me and gnaw on my shoelaces all throughout the interview.

Then when we were done I took a couple of photos of Simon where he was desperately trying not to smile for the camera because he wanted to look all serious and moody! Haha. Then his wife (his first wife, not his current wife, Lysette Anthony) served tea and Christmas cake and we sat around for a while talking about football.

Thanks for bring back these great memories Justin smile
  11. Welcome. :-)
