Have you heard any of it D?

  1. I thought that the main theme and tracks such as "Pegasus" and "To The Battle" were good but the rest is a bit too much like a mainstream movie score for this type of film rather than the better quality I would expect from Navarrete.

The following quote from Navarrete was very off putting.

"The score started out more orchestral and classical and then became more loopy and programmed and “heavy” sounding."

Your review certainly leaves me in two minds, pretty much like the clips I've heard, some of which I liked. I do like Navarrete so I might take a chance on this?

IT's a very good score, imo, wrongly-misplaced as just another RC - ish score. The grand, old-fashioned main theme although a bit monotonous, it's a very welcome addition too. But Tim, i don't think it sounds very Navarette.

Given how the album is mostly action music, and those cues ended up sounding so cluttered and unfocused, a 3 stars rating verges on generosity, IMHO. I was hoping that Javier would do a superior job and wins me over as a fan, but since he didn't offer anything significantly new, or divergent from Ramin's effort, I'll stay with Ramin's version.

Give it some time. It's ages better than the Djawadi version. It just needs many listening sessions to start revealing its graces. And btw, Navarette isn't alone on the movie. See the premise, the producers, the film-makers; thank God they even let him use an orchestra and the grand main theme in the first place smile

Colosseum now has clips up on every track of Javier Navarrete's new score for the HBO film HEMINGWAY & GELLHORN, which is after WRATH OF THE TITANS, more back to what we expect from him:

    http://www.colosseum.de/product_info.ph … rete-.html

Some lovely guitar and violin parts, sounds good. Just too bad for the mood-breaking songs (no less then 8, positioned in between the score tracks), especially the english ones.
  3. Maybe a case for selective digital purchasing? But that tends to be a balance between total cost of individual tracks vs album purchase and then discarding the songs.

Empire Online just put up a clip from Neil Jordan's upcoming vampire drama BYZANTIUM, which contains a prominent preview (a minute) of Javier Navarrete's score.

    http://www.empireonline.com/news/story.asp?NID=35096

Since Elliot Goldenthal delivered one of my favourite scores of his with Jordan's previous take on the vampire world, INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE, I've got high hopes for Navarrete's version. We all know he's capable of great scores, and this first clip isn't disappointing, however slight. Very much looking forward to both film and score.

A fine composer, lets hope he's not put into MV/RC temp track hell again.

    THE HOLE
    Music by Javier Navarrete
    LLLCD 1247
    Limited Edition of 3000 units
    Retail Price: $19.98

Produced by Javier Navarrete and Dan Goldwasser
    Mastered by Doug Schwartz
    Art Direction by Dan Goldwasser

Spanish composer Javier Navarrete fills in Jerry’s shoes exquisitely with this creepy, sensitive gothic horror score to Joe Dante’s latest opus, THE HOLE. Like his score to the brilliant Pan’s Labyrinth, the score to The Hole is designed to scare, inspire and awe its listeners.

From visionary director Joe Dante comes a suspense thriller that explores the fears and secrets buried deep in the human mind. Life couldn’t possibly get worse, or so thought 17 year old Dane (Chris Massoglia) and his 10 year old brother Lucas (Nathan Gamble), when their single mother Susan (Teri Polo) uproots them from New York City to the sleepy little town of Bensonville. For Dane the only exciting thing about their new town is the beautiful girl next door, Julie (Haley Bennett). With Susan spending more and more time at work, Dane and Lucas are left unattended to explore the depths of their eerie new residence. With Dane paying more attention to Julie, he has far less time and patience for his little brother. But then everything changes when they find a sinister bottomless hole under a locked trap door in the basement. As the brothers experiment with the hole they realize that the cold pit goes on forever. They drop a nail and never hear it hit bottom. They lower a flashlight and a video camera and they get consumed by the darkness. Hoping for some answers about the house's past, Dane and Lucas bring Julie in on their new discovery. When the hole is exposed, evil is unleashed. With strange shadows lurking around every corner and past nightmares coming to life, the trio will have to come face to face their darkest fears to put an end to THE HOLE.

Sadly there's so very few horror scores I can listen to.
I like many of the main themes, but for an entire horror score to keep my attention.... almost never happens (and only then often with much older scores, like the Salter ones).
