  1. SILVA SCREEN RECORDS PRESENTS
    50TH ANNIVERSARY WORLD PREMIERE RELEASE
    LAWRENCE OF ARABIA

A Special 50th Anniversary Release of the Complete Newly - recorded Oscar-winning score from the DAVID LEAN classic with music by MAURICE JARRE

Widely considered one of the most influential films in film history this album features, for the first time, the complete 77-Minute Score performed by the acclaimed and award-winning City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Nic Raine. The album was recorded from the original 1962 orchestrations by Gerard Schurmann.

Though a virtual unknown in Hollywood at the time, Maurice Jarre would soon earn the first of his 3 Oscars for his majestic and ground-breaking score for Lawrence of Arabia. As described by film historian and author Frank K. DeWald in the booklet of the recording:

“His [Jarre’s] rich thematic material for LAWRENCE included both “Western” and “Eastern” melodic ideas, and his sweeping theme for the desert proved highly memorable (exceeded only by “Lara’s Theme” from DR. ZHIVAGO a few years later). His handling of those ideas was dramatically apt, and he proved fully up to the challenge of the many moments in the film when music alone (or, rather, music in partnership with the breathtaking cinematography) needed to carry the full emotional weight of a scene.”

    1. Overture (4:23)
    2. Main Titles (1:56)
    3. First Entrance to the Desert

This release is the Tadlow012 recording without the compilation CD of Jarre material. If I were to guess why I would say that the Tadlow never received a release in the US.

"As the Tadlow 2 CD release was only ever released on MAIL ORDER and through SPECIALIST OUTLETS...I licenced the single score to Silva Screen in the hope that it might find an additional market in North America outside of Screen Archives, Intrada etc....

So this release is not for the "fans" who hopefully already bought the 2CD set ... but it is for Joe Public. (I've got to try and get some money back somehow as it was a very costly recording)

Hummm... rehashing the Gerard Schurmann controversy seems rather unnecessary and really makes your review bloated. My recommendation would be that if you do want to bring up Schurmaan, fine, but maybe just link to the article in question and not copy and paste it in the body of your review. Your review should really be about the music and the new recording - not the controversy.

    Just my opinion.

I'm not saying that it isn't interesting. What I was trying to say was that pasting the entire article into your review seemed rather unnecessary. I like the changes you recently made to the review though.

A further comment. For the majority of my life my classical and soundtrack listening went no further than myself. I just bought and listened keeping my thoughts to myself. I sometimes worked as much as 90 hours a week and had no time. I was very happy in my photography work. When I had the stroke part of the therapy was to start a website and share my feelings. I really went along with it because if I refused I would have been told to leave the rehab facility. I'm beginning to feel the whole thing was a mistake. I can't explain what happened to my brain other than my whole life changed. It was like someone took a syringe and drained away my feelings and thinking process. Not too long ago I was sitting at a table and four people were talking to me at the same time about four different things. I pleaded with them to talk to me one at a time as my brain was going crazy with trying to absorb the info. No one listened to me and I finally had to get up from the table and leave which of course no one understood because the majority of the population is clueless. I process information differently and I found what Erik posted with the picture, the Fitzpatrick and Schurmann comments insulting and not a joke or funny at all. I agreed with Erik and took the article out of the review and put a link in its place. I was too stupid to think that one through on my own. My brain will become focused on one thing and when it does that's it. If you had a stroke you'd get it but I really can't explain it to you. I can't love anymore because it was taken away from me. I feel nothing. My brain has never really healed and I doubt that it ever will.

Tom - If you make your work public be prepare to have it judged both positively and negatively. In addition, the facepalm image was in response to you not getting Basil Wrathbone's joke which stated... Gerard Schurmann responds to the review: "I claim all the credit for the review. It is 98% my work and this fellow sdtom wrote virtually nothing."

BTW, a question. Did you add "Orchestrations Gerard Schurmann" to the Lawrence cover image?

Sorry, but I'm a little confused: do I understand correctly that this is basically a condensed budget release re-issue of the Tadlow 2CD rerecording?
    That would be really good!!

This is the North American release of the Tadlow recording sans Disc 2 which featured suites from other Jarre scores. It's meant to be sold in record stores (if they still exist) where as the Tadlow release was available via mail order or through specialty outlets only.

so people can order it easier (cd#) and to recognize Schurmann's contribution to the release. I didn't include Richard Rodgers because none of his material was ever used.

But that doesn't make sense? That credit isn't on the original cover. And you've never added the orchestrator credit over top the cover image to any other film music reviews you do. The cover was fine as is.

Look, all we are doing is trying to help. Don't get so angry and defensive. If we didn't give a shit we wouldn't write anything. I liked your review and I think it's great that you give the reader audio samples which help get your point across. It's just a few things that you included in your original review, which have now been fixed, seemed a little bizarre.

And just a thought... I'm currently listening to this album right now and it floors me that this is the same team that recorded all those godawful compilation albums back in the 90's. It's amazing how far this group as come to become one of the premiere recording orchestra's in the world, IMO. This Lawrence recording is absolutely magnificent.
