This week, we are announcing a number of exciting details about this summer's edition of the International Film Music Festival in Cordoba, Spain.

The festival already announced that Oscar winner Mychael Danna will take part in the festival, and today we announced the following very cool news:

    - - -

Marco Beltrami to receive first Elmer Bernstein Award at 2nd International Film Music Festival, Cordoba

    CÓRDOBA, Spain / February 27, 2013

In honor of the legendary film composer of such Hollywood classics as The Magnificent Seven, The Ten Commandments and To Kill a Mockingbird, the International Film Music Festival of Cordoba is excited to announce the institution of the Elmer Bernstein Award for Outstanding Contributions to the Art of Film Scoring.

The inaugural Elmer Bernstein Award will be handed out during a spectacular gala concert event to prolific composer Marco Beltrami during the 2nd International Film Music Festival, Cordoba, June 23-30, 2013. The son of Elmer Bernstein, Peter Bernstein, will be present conducting the Malaga Philharmonic Orchestra in a Tribute to Elmer Bernstein before the festival presents a lengthy programme featuring the innovative and engaging music of Marco Beltrami.

Marco Beltrami, born 1966, is clearly one of the busiest A-list composers in Hollywood right now. Among his current and upcoming scores are A Good Day to Die Hard, Warm Bodies, The Sessions, The Wolverine and World War Z. Trained at USC under legendary composer Jerry Goldsmith (Alien, L.A. Confidential, The Mummy), Beltrami enjoyed over-night success with his score for Wes Craven’s Screamin 1996 (he scored all three sequels as well). Like many succesful film composers, Beltrami first made his mark in the horror genre (Mimic, The Faculty, The Watcher) but is now a highly sought-after composer in virtually every genre. Among his most important film scores are Live Free or Die Hard, I Robot, Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, Hellboy and Knowing. Beltrami was nominated twice for the Academy Award, for 3:10 to Yuma and The Hurt Locker (shared with Buck Sanders).

Elmer Bernstein (1922-2004) was one the most influential and respected film composers in Hollywood for a period of five decades. He is credited with being one of the innovative composers of the “young” generation scoring films in the 1950s and 60s bringing in a clear jazz idiom into the traditional film music vocabulary. He scored hundreds of films and television series, always with his own distinct stylistic trademark, and won the Oscar for Thoroughly Modern Millie. Among his most popular scores are Ghostbusters, To Kill a Mockingbird, The Great Escape, Airplane!, Wild Wild West, Animal House, Trading Places, The Magnificient Seven, Bringing Out the Dead and An American Werewolf in London.

Peter Bernstein, born in 1951, is the son of legendary composer Elmer Bernstein. He is a prolific and versatile composer in his own right, with such film scores as Canadian Bacon, The Ewok Adventure and Ewoks: The Battle of Endor to his credit.

On Friday, March 1, more details, including confirmed guests and events, will be announced by The 2nd International Film Music Festival of Cordoba on June 23-30, 2013.

Elmer Bernstein Award Gala Concert to feature
World Concert Premieres of the Music of Marco Beltrami

“It is uniquely significant that this award recognizes highly talented composers who are in mid-career, reaching their full potential, and whose greatest contributions to film music may be yet to come.” - Peter Bernstein

    CORDOBA, Spain / June 11, 2013

    • Marco Beltrami to receive first Elmer Bernstein Award for Outstanding Contributions to the Art of Film Scoring at the 2nd International FIlm Music Festival, Córdona, Spain

    • Gala Concert to feature World Concert Premieres of brand new concert suites of Beltrami’s classic scores for I, Robot and Hellboy as well as the 2013 sci-fi adventure Snowpiercer and the unused score for Texas Rangers

    • Peter Bernstein to conduct a grand symphonic tribute to his father, the legendary Elmer Bernstein, featuring classic scores such as The Ten Commandments, Ghostbusters and To Kill a Mockingbird

Marco Beltrami, one of the busiest film composers in Hollywood, will receive the first Elmer Bernstein Award for Outstanding Contributions to the Art of Film Scoring during a gala concert hosted by the 2nd International Film Music Festial in Córdoba on June 28. The award will be handed out to Beltrami by the son of the legendary composer, Peter Bernstein (a composer in his own right), who is also conducting a grand symphonic tribute to his father.

“It is an honor for me to be able to present the first annual Elmer Bernstein Award for Outstanding Contributions to the Art of Film Scoring,” said Peter Bernstein. “Throughout his life my father was dedicated to helping young musicians, and to protecting and preserving the art of film music composition. His 1972 article in High Fidelity Magazine titled ‘What Ever Happened to Great Movie Music’, along with creating ‘Elmer Bernstein's Film Music Collection’ of re-recordings of old scores in 1974, was significant in reviving and expanding public interest in film music, and the results are seen in this festival and award.”

Recognizing the unique approach to the Elmer Bernstein Award, Peter continued: “Late in his life when he was receiving life-time achievement awards he once said to me that it was a shame that someone should be honored only at the end of a career. Therefore it is uniquely significant that this award recognizes highly talented composers who are in mid-career, reaching their full potential, and whose greatest contributions to film music may be yet to come.”

Prolific Hollywood composer Marco Beltrami, born 1966, is one of the most sought-after composers in the film music business. This year alone, he has added the scores for major Hollywood movies such as World War Z, The Wolverine, A Good Day to Die Hard, Snowpiercer and Carrie to his resumée.

Produced by Mikael Carlsson, the Elmer Bernstein Award Concert featuring the Film Music of Marco Beltrami will see the Malaga Philharmonic Orchestra and the Coro Ziryab conducted by Arturo Diez Boscovich present a number of world concert premieres of Beltrami’s music. It will feature brand new suites from I Robot, Hellboy, Showpiercer and Texas Rangers, as well as world premiere performances of selections from Knowing and A Good Day to Die Hard. The program also features music from Mimic and Soul Surfer.

The Marco Beltrami section of the concert will be preceeded by a Tribute to Elmer Bernstein, conducted by Peter Bernstein. This program features a selection of suites and themes from the legendary composer’s scores for The Ten Commandments, To Kill a Mockingbird, Ghostbusters, Far from Heaven and The Magnificient Seven plus a medley arranged by Peter Bernstein featuring rare themes from films such as The Journey of Natty Gann, A River Runs Through It, Desire Under the Elms and Stripes.
