Longtime orchestrator for Rozsa has been getting a bit of attention from Naxos with a second volume of his orchestral works. He did very little writing for Hollywood but concentrated on his own compositions.

This is the third volume of his work and the "Festival Overture" is right from the cinema. Fun to hear snippets from his films.

  1. I think your link isn't correct. I don't think it links to the published post but to a draft - following the link goes to the WordPress log-in page.

Read your article and found myself thinking I absolutely KNEW that name, but as an orchestrator rather than a composer.
And hey-ho! Here you are, giving the answer yourself! smile

Thanks for the link Tom. Just had a listen.

I enjoyed this overture - probably more than some who have listened to it and then written about it (I did a little Google search). There were several mentions that his Festival Overture was less engaging that the other pieces on the Naxos CD. Perhaps this reflects the piece being more akin to film music than the more classically structured form of the other pieces?

I could certainly hear Ben-Hur and The Lost Weekend references but they did seem to be very short phrases/motifs that were key devices in the aforementioned scores - particularly with The Lost Weekend - and I enjoyed these familiar parts. I think that they were fleeting enough for them not to be too intrusive.

Overall, the piece does want me to play some Rozsa!

Thanks, Tom! I just gave it a proper listen and it sure has Rozsa vibes all about it. I wasn't aware of him before, so thanks for pointing him out.
