Just got a batch of Xmas music in the mail from Naxos. The first one up is called Cool Yule performed by the U.S. Air Force Band. What they did was take a Xmas tune like Jingle Bells and adapt it to a big band hit. In this case it was Sing Sing Sing. The idea worked well and I'm already putting together a review. I'm sure Martijn would like it as well as Timmer and Erik.

Half way through the review and with a little bit of searching I found it online for $8.99

  1. I found the album, Tom. It's a fun idea. Those who enjoy big band will love it. I was a fan of slower paced ones, though the louder pieces were fun.

Glad you liked it. It was a little jazzy at times but overall it is a keeper for me. Very talented group of airmen.

This one Alan might just be up your alley as it is a bit different. As long as you like big band I think you'll be happy.

I have had a listen to the first few clips but, unfortunately, you are way off the mark with this one. Not for me at all.

Heh! What a fun idea. It really helps if your familiar with the original swing tunes in the first place, though.

The performances seem technically VERY good, but -and maybe that's just the quality of the preview excerpts- sound a little clinical?

I'm rather enjoying this! I'll have a look if I can get it cheap.

I agree that it is a bit clinical in parts but their arrangements are the key to this album. I've seen it online through Amazon for $8.99.

Listening to a Dominik Hauser Xmas CD. I like some of the work that he has done but this is just another Xmas CD to me.

Unfortunately (and probably unfairly), my heart does tend to sink when I see the name Dominik Hauser. I have come to associate his name with re-recordings that are not particularly interesting. Sometimes his name is associated with projects that I find interesting, but not usually.

He has done some interesting work for BSX along with the pianist Park. I definitely agree that there is a bit of weeding out to do with him.
