This is such an odd opinion, I can't quite wrap my head around it. I can understand the script and its characters may not appeal to absolutely everyone, but what it gets right in terms of Monster Movie Making, it gets very right.

I'm at a loss on this one. I can't wait for Edwards' next film.

What it gets right adds up to about 15-20 minutes of the film. That's not enough for me to recommend it.

    Shame about the scoring though.

In fact, which piece of music would YOU put to this?

I'm forever trying to find this on DVD crazy.
Scoring? McNeely's Requiem from the episode Verdun 1916 from The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles would do nicely. love

Well, I spent about 6 hours working on this. biggrin Finding the music was easy. Reign of Fire. The sound effects... not so much. However, I did managed to find a lot of what I was looking for but most of the sound effects were of poor quality. The mix is really rough. If I had access to my sound effects library at work and maybe two weeks to mix this properly the video would have sounded a lot better.

    Enjoy!

Not keen on the music choice, but I greatly enjoyed the sound effects and the mix! Well done!

    Nice work, Erik!

I agree with Martijn -- I would rather have had Williams' WAR OF THE WORLDS or some such thing (I'm not a fan of REIGN OF FIRE), but it hit some nice synch points.
    I am extremely serious.

  1. Six hours well spent Erik! You see me wow-e-fied!

There are sound effects libraries? I thought they always make them from scratch? I'm so naive. wink

    That was a great setpiece.

  2. Our daughter got Maleficent on BluRay, so we watched it again - kind of reluctantly, because the movie was such a captivating experience when we went to see it the first time, I was afraid it would loose some of its grandieur on the small screen. It does, but it still looks so beautiful, and, of course, it still soars on the mighty wings of Angelina Jolie, the charming smile of Elle Fanning, and the rousing score by James Newton Howard.

  4. I watched today the very good, but sadly not released on DVD, Disney film "Run, Cougar, Run".

I had very positive things to say about it in my IMDb review, but I'll just say some brief things here: it's worth your time and it's got a great score.

I wanted to do this for the Mystery Score Clips thread, but there's so much score in the film that it's a time-consuming task in of itself, so I passed. Sadly the score is not released either.

    The film:

Not really, but it seems like it's the only score we're not allowed to talk about without having seen the film, so I thought I'd throw it in there and see how things go.

(Admittedly I keep thinking you're all referring to some Marvel spin off film.)
  5. Nonsense. Fury is a 50s TV show "about a horse and a boy who loves him."

I remember it aired on German TV when I was very small.

  6. Just saw Sunshine (2007)

I choose it because I did non see it a second time after I bought the DVD about 5 years ago. I found it better this time than I remembered it to be. I also choose it because I wanted to compare it to 2010. The dispositions of both stories are somewhat comparable. In the course of the story though the film changes from 2010 to Event Horizon. There are some pretty nasty scenes here given that fact that this film was greenlighted for 12 year olds here in Germany.
I still think the final act of the film isn't executed very well, the main villain is weekly motivated and he departs as suddenly as he pops up. Too many questions remain unanswered.
If you compare the production design between 1984 and 2007: 2010 was still under the "space-ships-are-white-and-shiny" doctrine. That has changed since than. The interior of the 2007 ships look much more like submarines.
If I remember correctly this was a high profile UK project that was a financial failure. It is an OK film, that could have been much better.

  7. For all its aesthetic strengths (yes Thor, we know), the episodic progression - where the second half seems only loosely connected to many of the things hinted at in the first half - works against the overall effect. Funny that noone says that about 2001: a space odyssey, but I guess the direction there signals throughout that our frame extends well past the story of any one character.

I understand some issues around cast availability led to narrative reworking during the shooting of the film, which may explain the film's sharp right turn at albequerque.

I love SUNSHINE. I also think EVENT HORIZON is one of the most underrated science fiction films of the 90s, based on a similar concept.

For some reason, I never liked the score that much on album, and I used to own it. Strange, because I like both Kamen, Orbital and the concept of combining the two. But I sold it back in the early 2000s. Perhaps I would have felt differently today.

  8. I like the score but I don't listen to it all to often. I may watch Event Horizon tonight.
