    Finally got Netflix and this was my first binge. Except for the rather daft final episode, where the war was far too clean and easy to resolve, I thought it was really good. I don't know if my Facebook feed is representative of the general reaction but I'm pretty sure I read little but negative comments about it, which I struggle to understand. Easily the most consistently strong season of Star Trek on tv since Deep Space Nine in its pomp.


    Well. Season 2 was total rubbish. What a shame.

    Game of Thrones

    I was never as hooked by this as many others, but it was terrific in its last few episodes (except the awful digital compression - was horrible to watch at times). While I’ll always roll my eyes at the “best show ever!” brigade, it certainly did have a scale that was very impressive for tv.

    I go to the cinema about twice a year and has to use one of my 2019 visits for this. I’ll say one thing for it, it’s visually resplendent- extraordinary to look at. I’ll say another thing for it - the actress playing Jasmine is also extraordinary to look at. Contrary to what seems to be popular opinion, I thought Will Smith did really well in what was always going to be a difficult role to do. Overall I thought it was about as good as it could have been, which isn’t a particularly high bar but is what it is.

    Saw the animated movie today again, just to see what they will pay tribute to in the 2019 version (which we'll see next Wednesday). Overall, I was pleasantly surprised how much I liked this 1992 version. Lot's of heart which I'm guessing will be hard to recreate in the remake. Then again, I don't expect much from it since I totally hate Ritchie's style, so who knows I might be pleasantly surprised by it.

  10. Crazy Rich Asians was OK but all the rich lifestyle porn was a major turnoff. I find that sort of stuff pretty distasteful.

    what I love about this film is the authenticity, the feeling it's all real. The stunts, the cinematography, it makes the action more gripping than a CGI flick. That bike ride was astounding, and the shots of the finale with the helicopters is unbelievable. Kudos for Cruise for wanting to do that all

  13. I watched it on a plane, which is exactly the right setting for a piece of schlock like that. All I wanted was Jason Statham punching a giant shark and it only sporadically managed to deliver even that.

    That's actually a genre I love -- high budget "B movies" with loads of fun setpieces. Stephen Sommers excelled at this, with films like DEEP RISING or THE MUMMY. Or Harlin's DEEP BLUE SEA. This is in the same territory, and executed on the same level. It's a film I'll keep coming back to in the years to come.

    I prefer Deep Rising, The Mummy and Deep Blue Sea over Meg any day! Why? Because they house scores that are at least memorable. If you make an over exaggerated film, make sure the music is not so damn uneventful during it. It takes half the fun away.

    I love films like The Mummy. The Meg wasn't fit to wash the underside of The Mummy's camels.
  22. anybody following Fear the Walking Dead?

    Considering I'm a big fan of zombies and I love The Walking Dead, I started with this one. I'm only up to the 5th episode of the very first season but already I'm irritated by the sheer dumbness and selfishness of the main characters. [spoiler]I mean Rubén Blades (aka Daniel Salazar) will probably open a full packed place of zombies, most likely to cause mayhem with the military so that he can infiltrate the medical center to rescue his wife)[/spoiler]. Probably considering I haven't seen the final episode yet but all signs lead to this conclusion. I mean who the fuck does that?

    That's what I liked and still like about The Walking Dead. Not only is it damn tense but the characters are loveable or hateable, but at least you can understand their motives or they react very real and very normal. Here the characters mean jack shit to me, ... so far and the react just like ignorant people who don't understand what the hell is happening at all.

    So I'm willing to continue for a bit, but I'm also asking will it pick up in the following seasons? Reason is I heard it actually becomes much better in the latter seasons, but for now this is a stinker and illogical in so many ways.

  23. The Meg (2018)

    I quite like the first part, when the plot is a blend of The Lost World and The Abyss. Despite the generic story and characters the film kind of works for me here. I wish they had further developed this setting.
    After that part is finished, it just becomes another JAWS rip off.
    The child is annoying because it doesn't speak or act like any child that age would do. It is also annoying because you know from the get go, that neither the kid nor its mother is going to die.
    That blond woman's character goes nowhere.
    Too much cheap poetic justice, too much generic catharsis.
    I thought the score was functional but nothing I would desire to own on CD.

  24. Shaka Zulu (1986)

    A 10 part series featuring Henry Cele as the legendary Zulu king. The BluRay I watch shows a lovely restoration. A heavily cut version of the show had a single run on German TV back in the day. It impressed me enough to seek the series out now. I was not mistaken.

    so far up to season 2 episode 2 of Fear the Walking Dead. I can't say it progressed immensely, but something tells me to continue with it for the time being. I gave Black Summer a chance with the first episode, didn't fully wow me but then again, it did give me some chills. So will continue with it. However Z-Nation looks so fake and cheap, will not continue with it.

    The Walking Dead is still my favorite Zombie show, up to season 7 already (I know I'm slow as hell in series tongue )

    I love HGW, but thought the Meg was pretty bad.

    Skipped through the film on Netflix as well, looked horrifying.

    THE LION KING dir. John Favreau

    Just came out of a screening and I’m utterly overwhelmed by how mixed my feelings are.

    I’ll come back and edit this post when I’ve collected my thoughts. But overall, this is an upsettingly mixed bag.

    Stranger Things 3

    Beautifully shot, fantastic CGI (the best I've ever seen in a TV show), wonderfully creepy monster designs.... but thematically disjointed. And basically the same schtick again: Monster terrorises town, kids inexplicably figure everything out, fight monster, Millie Bobbie Whatever yet again proves she's one of the most overrated child actors, send monster back to upside down world, cliffhanger for a set up for the exact same formula in season 4.

    It goes from heady sci-fi/horror to a farce a little too abrubtly at times. And the whole 80s nostalgia, for me, is the least interesting part of the show. Every time it's shoe-horned in it takes me out of the story. The whole Russian-Terminator guy was a reference too far. We get it, he's the terminator. Winona Ryder continues to be one-note perpetually-flustered mum. And that cringe Neverending Story song scene gave me grey hairs... but of course everyone on social media loves it.

    I think I hate everything.
