Just realised this magnificent composer / photographer (!) doesn't have a page on his own:

Check out the main titles from his upcoming 2014 release: CASTLEVANIA: LORDs OF SHADOWS 2
https://soundcloud.com/oscararaujo/osca … ania-lords which is nothing short to punk

and make sure you check out his previous, ifmca winning score, Castlevania: lords of shadows: https://soundcloud.com/oscararaujo/ and http://www.amazon.fr/Castlevania-Ultima … mp;sr=1-37

    His composing page:

    his photography page:

    this guy's awesome.
Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders.
  1. Hmmm. I like it, but it's not flooring me the way the first one did. It seems to have switched out the Howard Shore vibe for something a bit more trailer-music-ish, with the electronics and the slow buildup and all. Not much of a discernable theme in that cue either, although in all fairness it wasn't the themes that made the first one either. I don't like how almost inaudible the choir is in the second half of the cue, either; again, the first one had it up front and in your face, and I loved that.

    Still really enjoyable though. smile
  2. And in the meantime don't forget Araujo's score for Castevania: Lords of Shadow - Mirror of Fate - a direct sequel to the original:

Not as stand-out as the original IMO, but worth hearing nonetheless.

  3. Ever since first hearing Oscar Araujo's Castlevania: Lords of Shadow and learning that they were making the sequel, I've been anticipating its score. And now it's hit, I've listened to it, and...I'm a little disappointed.

Don't get me wrong, it is still an extremely entertaining, strong four-star score that's easily the best I've heard in 2014 so far from any medium (sorry, Desplat fans). But it's a quite different score to the first one, and not necessarily for the better. To start with, there are electronics...mostly of the relatively unobtrusive, mid- and lower-range pulsing and thumping variety familiar from stuff like the Zimmer Batman scores. They're integrated pretty well and help drive the music along quite nicely. But they also take away a lot of the organic personality the first one had (although this one is not likely to remind you of Howard Shore quite as much). The other major problem is that the choral contribution is toned down quite noticeably compared to its predecessor, both in the mix and in the writing. A few of the action cues still contain the requisite chanting, but it's less in-your-face. At times the ensemble of this score sounds sampled, though at others it's very muscular and organic (some great brass writing to be heard here).

Themes have never been these score's strong points, but there is one major new identity, "Dracula's Theme", which is a see-sawing piano identity that's morphed into a big stomping march in the final action cue, "Satan". That cue then ends with some reprised material from the first score's "The Final Confrontation", which makes it easily the album's highlight. Other strong action cues include "The Toy Maker", "The Siege Titan" and "Hunter and Prey". A few cues are fully orchestral and choral versions of the ideas we heard in sampled form in last year's Mirror of Fate. For example, the aforementioned "Hunter and Prey" is a rearranged version of that score's "Lady of the Crypt". It's good to hear these ideas fleshed out to their full potential, although it does make it unlikely that I'll ever revisit Mirror of Fate.

So while it's not as good as the first one (which is the best video game score I've heard thus far), it's still definitely worth your time. Check it out! smile

It's more modern for sure, more up to date (whatever this means), less symphonic but still equally thematic, big-ass bold and massive sounding, i love it. The choir work is amazing as well and the main theme is infectious; i was a bit disappointment at first but after repeated listens i found the thematic structure is much more bolder than what it initially appears.

  4. Reviews of Castlevania 1 and 2

    I like it punk

    - Castlevania: Lords of Shadow
    - Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2
    waaaaaahhhhhhhh!!! Where's my nut? arrrghhhhhhh
  5. I'm quite surprised you like the second one more than the first. For me it's the other way around, by quite a margin (the much more prominent choral writing in the first being the main reason...when you say that's one of the reasons this one is actually better, I thought to myself "doesn't he have that backwards??"). They're both really excellent, entertaining scores though, no doubt. smile

don't get me wrong, I really like choir. But I thought the second made better "sparse" use of it. Plus I find the second a bit more varied as well.

But my brother says he has a double CD presentation of both, and that I would revise my rating easily if I ever heard the first in full wink
