3 seconds later Demetris and Jordi turned up though, so no time to nurse my trauma.

the duck
My favourite is the Duck of death.
For no points whatsoever who can tell me what that refers to?
No one has got it right so far.
I'll give you all a clue and then I'll tell the answer in an hour or two?
The clue....
Gene Hackman
'The Duck of death'
It's from Clint Eastwood's Unforgiven
Hackman's character 'Little Bill' takes the piss out of Richard Harris as 'English Bob' who is known as "The DUKE of Death" by continually referring to him as "the duck of death".

Does anyone find that when you start playing film music that you end up being all alone in the room?
Or is this just me?The views expressed in this post are entirely my own and do not reflect the opinions of maintitles.net, or for that matter, anyone else. http://www.racksandtags.com/falkirkbairn -

Not only in the room but in the whole house. Somehow I get kinda transported by the music I´m playing and only come back at the moment I push the stop button, if that´s what you mean.
If you mean that everybody in the room leaves it because of the music, then shame on them!

I know exactly what you mean.
But on this occasion I was wondering if listening to film music can actually physically clear the room.
I find that I need to be in the car driving somewhere, and my audience is "trapped" in the car with me, for the family to listen to film music!!The views expressed in this post are entirely my own and do not reflect the opinions of maintitles.net, or for that matter, anyone else. http://www.racksandtags.com/falkirkbairn -

Yes, I know what you mean, I´ve edited my post (it has taken me a while to get the message
).
I usually play the music with my great headphones, so usually it´s only me listening to the music. I´ve never experienced the room clearance you talk about, but if I am ever in that situation I wouldn´t know what to think / do, seriously.Anything with an orchestra or with a choir....at some point will reach you -

I don't think many people out there find film music..unbearable? Of course it depends on what you're playing to them but my personal experiences so far were more than great, in car, in the flat, everywhere.Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders. -

Great technique! A bit tricky, but great.
I don´t use to play film music while I´m in the car with somebody not into film music; but when I´m with a score geek like me, man then I play it REALLY loud. The last time I did that with a friend was to show him the "Decimation Proclamation" track. He ended up like

Maybe my selections for the clip contest explains some of my experiences?
I always think that, although there are cues/themes that are intrinsically "catchy" for the general public (sort of Classic FM stuff for UK posters), it can be quite difficult for people to connect to a lot of film music. Particularly when listened to as isolated cues away from the movie. The views expressed in this post are entirely my own and do not reflect the opinions of maintitles.net, or for that matter, anyone else. http://www.racksandtags.com/falkirkbairn -

Yes, but that's usually the reason I turn the music on.
My friends don't hate film music, one who's a bit of a prick doesn't consider it as music at all, but outside of a film it just doesn't do anything for the rest. -

Good question Alan. I think it happens here too. They can have a couple of tracks, then they're done with it. My experience is that people who are not into filmmusic only like the catchy themes and all the rest must sound like underscore to them. While to us the music tells much more, we see the whole picture (pun not intended, I mean the whole musical picture, the connection between everything we hear), we hear what the music consists of, while other people just hear nervous sounds. Least popular therefore are action tracks, tension builders and anything 'weird' (we would call it ethnic stuff). -

Yeah, I mean do all the smaller themes in movies stand out to people? -
- CommentAuthorBregje
- CommentTimeJan 25th 2008
I don't think so. Only the obvious ones, like a heroic theme and a theme for the bad guys for instance.
I also forgot to say that I once heard a comment about filmmusic that it all sounds the same. I think that shows how they can't hear the subtle distinction like different themes, motifs, played by different instruments, in a different tempo, etc. Let alone different composer styles.
Man, they don't know what they're missing!!

I'm not at any concerts either. I'm very jealous of the Vienna one though. I could potentially still go see Elfman next week, but can't afford it really. And it's a bit short-notice now to take time off work etcetera.

Yeah, it's unbelievable that all these major concerts all fall within a few weeks. Horner, Elfman, Desplat. I'm fortunate to live close by and easy to get to. I hope there's one where we all can meet again.Kazoo -

Of course I'm a little jealuos, too. Who wouldn't be?
Still, there is a professional philharmonic orchestra here, located in Siegen, where I also work. They do a film music gala every year which is always very nice. They played four nights this year and all were sold out.
I really appreciate that the state largely funds these "Staatsorchester" so that some quality classical music culture can happen even in rural areas.

The same here! Well, I can't listen to any music today, because another memeber of the family is practicing the piano. So I do listen to music, but that would be somewhat off topic.
Also I have to mark essay-tests about a drama by Goethe. (Iphigenie auf Tauris). That of course is set in Goethe's imagined classical version of your country.
I thought the FSM "Ben Hur" edition would arrive today, but it didn't. The German postal service is already slowed down by Christmas parcels.
So, how are your little students? Have the taken you in their hearts yet?
Greetings!

Hello Volker!
I have to mark tests too, so I totaly understand!
My little students! Me five to seven year-olds are so cute! And we started English together so no problem there! My eight to nine year-olds are pretty good for their level. My nine and eleven year-olds are the problem! Young adolescents with a very bad level in English. The horror, the horror!
But they are all good kids who smile when they see me and that's what matters in the end!
I envy you that you grade such interesting tests! For me is Simple Present versus Present Continuous!

Present Continous - interesting, we call it Present Progressive, if that is the same thing ... the -ing thing.
So glad, you have a good relation to your students. Some month ago I saw a report about a Greek school. My impression was, that teachers have a more personal relation to their students there than they have here in Germany. Teachers are tutors in the first place not distributors of knowledge. I believe the same applies to US high schools. In Germany things are slowly developing in that direction. I strongly support that. But command structures are firmly ingrained in the German mind.

I wish I'd had a teacher to teach me a second language at that age! I hope that one day they'll see how lucky they've been to have the chance to learn a second language from such a young age. They're very lucky, and in that respect I envy them!
