but Hunger Games isn't Howard's Italian Job, it's his magnum opus.
Bach's music is heartless and robotic.
  1. I love the ‘Rue’s Farewell’ cue in the first score but other than that none of them would even make it into my top ten Howard scores. Glad you like them so much though!

I think part of the reason I love them so much is indeed how Rue's Farewell affected me when I first listened to it, and how well Howard reprises that melody.
Bach's music is heartless and robotic.
  2. It is such a stunning piece of music, so raw and full of emotion.

Any other particular cues you’d recommend from the series?

if I had to pick 2 from each score...

Hunger Games: Rue's Farewell, Healing Katniss
Catching Fire: I Need You, Arena Crumbles
Mockingjay Part 1: Remind Her Who the Enemy Is, Air Raid Drill
Mockingjay Part 2: Sewer Attack, There Are Worse Games to Play

that's not to mention Horn of Plenty and The Hanging Tree, both of which are terrific but not written by Howard.
Bach's music is heartless and robotic.
  3. My favourite cue by JNH remains the End Titles music "Redemption" from Flatliners. Wish Silva would do a newly recorded compilation of the awesome choral writing he does. I guess JNH is not well known enough to a general audience though.

This is about as close to incorrect as it is possible to be while still respecting the fact that people have different opinions. None of the Hunger Games scores are in JNH's top 30. An hour-long compilation of the best parts of all four scores might, might, sneak into the bottom of his top 15.

I think the way he develops the soundscape from folksy minimalism to an all out orchestral powerhouse is really impressive, and, taken together, a bigger accomplishment than his excellent standalones like Lady in the Water.

His magnum opus is WATERWORLD. This is the truth.
    I am extremely serious.

There's some outstanding material on this, but the album's far too long.

I'm not surprised you disagree Erik, as the scores are pretty much the antithesis of the type of scores you praise on your show.

Big disappointment he's not returning for Glass, the sequel to Unbreakable. With that and Balfe on Mission Impossible, it's up to Silvestri to save the year.
  6. My chips are all on Powell with Williams assist (never thought I'd be writing those names together) at this point...Although JNH does have a tasty pair of fantasy scores coming down the pipe as well.

We’re all pretending Snow Falling on Cedars never happened then? Fine. Be that way.

(It’s also the score he lobbied for the hardest to get, and worked on the most to ‘get it right’, so he might consider it his finest work himself).

I think all of the scores suggested as 'magnum opi'(?) are fine ones. They're just not as good as WATERWORLD -- which is a destillate of almost all the JNH sounds I love -- from ethereal synth writing to orchestral action music (from an era that I really loved that stuff) to ethnic stuff to awe and wonder.
    I am extremely serious.

NP: JUL I FLÅKLYPA [CHRISTMAS IN PINCHCLIFFE] (Knut Avenstroup Haugen)

I don't get why international fans aren't all over Haugen's FLÅKLYPA scores, since they have a lot of the lush, orchestral writing that he championed in the AGE OF CONAN scores.
    I am extremely serious.

I forgot that, you're quite right to point it out. It's brilliant. Almost as good as his best score, Maleficent.

It's interesting because in the game, the music is actually quite sparse. It only really comes to life (and extremely effectively) during certain cutscenes and boss fights. But on album, I agree it needed a twenty minute pruning. Here's my current playlist:

    God of War
    Memories of Mother
    Witch of the Woods
Lullaby of Giants (These four tracks all appear to be concert suites.)
    Ashes
    A Giant's Prayer
    The Dragon
    The Healing
    The Reach of Your Godhood
    Stone Mason
    Valkyries
    Deliverance
    Salvation
    The Ninth Realm
    The Summit
    Epilogue
