Vanilla 1.1.4 is a product of Lussumo. More Information: Documentation, Community Support.

  1. Pulling a couple of choice tracks off each Howard Shore score in my collection and hitting 'shuffle' on iTunes produced a nice playlist tonight.

    'Icarus' from THE AVIATOR
'Valley of the Dragons' from SOUL OF THE ULTIMATE NATION (wow - nasty pinched sound next to THE AVIATOR!)
    'End Credits' from DEAD RINGERS
'All Dressed up in Blue' from COPLAND
'Before and After' from BEFORE AND AFTER
    'The Desert' from SEVEN
'Bilbo's Song' from RETURN OF THE KING: COMPLETE RECORDINGS
    'Mrs Doubtfire' from MRS DOUBTFIRE
    'Queenborough Hall' from THE YARDS
'The Epitaph' from SOUL OF THE ULTIMATE NATION
    'Crash' from CRASH
'Happy Birthday, Nicholas' from THE GAME
    'Tatiana' from EASTERN PROMISES
    'Naked Lunch' from NAKED LUNCH
'The Germ Free Zone' from THE AVIATOR
'My Name is Rene Gallimard' from M BUTTERFLY (superb cue from a lovely and underrated score)
'Richard, Duke of York' from LOOKING FOR RICHARD
    'John Doe Jersey' from DOGMA
'Twilight and Shadow' from RETURN OF THE KING (original album) -- beautiful track, sadly eroded in its extended form
'The Departed Tango' from THE DEPARTED
    'Main Title' from PANIC ROOM
'Tides of Hope' from SOUL OF THE ULTIMATE NATION
    'The Finale' from THE FLY
    'Main Title' from THE SCORE
'Willie's Tears' from THE YARDS -- SOOOO beautiful
    'Becky from ESTHER KAHN
    'Internal Investigation' from THE YARDS
'The White Rider' from THE TWO TOWERS
'A Genuine Game Urge' from EXISTENZ
'Isengard Unleashed' from THE TWO TOWERS
'Would you like a cup of tea?' from NOBODY'S FOOL
    'Boston Common' from THE DEPARTED
    'Billy's Theme' from THE DEPARTED
'Caras Galadhon - Lament for Gandalf' from FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING: COMPLETE RECORDINGS

Mysteriously missing: for some reason, I have not ripped the original albums of FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING, HISTORY OF VIOLENCE, THE CELL or THE CLIENT. I also could not find the 'Beacon Lighting' cue from the original RETURN OF THE KING album, which is strange.

I don't have... BOY, SILENCE OF THE LAMBS, others.

Not-so-mysteriously-missing: THE LAST MIMZY. Don't ask!

That's a nice list Michael - how long is it in hours and minutes?
Luminous beings are we.. Not this crude matter.
  2. Just a shade over 2 hours...
A butterfly thinks therefore I am
  3. I thought that I'd join in the Shore-fest:

    "The Hearing" from THE YARDS
"The Road To Isengard" from THE RETURN OF THE KING (COMPLETE)
"The Lighting of The Beacons" from THE RETURN OF THE KING (COMPLETE)
    "SWAT" from SEVEN
    "Run Late" from THE SCORE
"The Breaking of The Fellowship" from THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING
"The Note Had Been Struck" from ESTHER KAHN
    "Mirror Image" from CRASH
    "Minor Catastrophe" from PHILADELPHIA
"The Score Begins" from THE SCORE
"Track 30" from A KISS BEFORE DYING
"The Prophecy" from THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING
    "Ghosts" from LOOKING FOR RICHARD
    "Chasing John Doe" from SEVEN
"Grond - The Hammer of The Underworld" from THE RETURN OF THE KING (COMPLETE)
    "Willie's Tears" from THE YARDS
"The Bridge of Khazad Dum" from THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING
    "A Benevolent Psychopathology" from CRASH
    "Hilltop Diner" from THE YARDS
"Henry, Earl of Richmond" from LOOKING FOR RICHARD

    Who next?

  4. Ah, I do not have A KISS BEFORE DYING or PHILADELPHIA. Since you know CRASH and SEVEN better than I, I think I will go and add those tracks to the playlist.

RE: RETURN OF THE KING. I listened to the Complete Recordings version of 'The Battle of the Pelennor Fields' last night. Though it's an edit job mixing three different cues, I actually prefer the original album version. When the Nazgul music comes in, there's a bit more of a two-sided battle going on. It feels a bit more musically coherent too.
A butterfly thinks therefore I am
  5. There's quite a few examples where the original CDs are more enjoyable tracks compared with the complete versions.

I thought that my Howard Shore "random play" was quite a good sampling - though there was a bit too much from Middle Earth!

Michael, I quite enjoyed spending some time listening to random cues from specific composers. Maybe you could modify the topic heading and make in more of a general composer's random playlist: I had a listen to 10-cue random plays for a couple of composers last night and wanted to share. But maybe the thread-police would pounce on individual threads for specific composers? Especially if they only get 1-2 posts per topic!

That's a bit too much information, Michael!!

Last night I had a random MARCO BELTRAMI playlist amounting to 10 cues (out of a possible 123 favourites):

    "It's Over, Sid" (00:46) - SCREAM 2
    "Organ Grinder" (1:57) - I AM DINA
"Main Title" (2:08) - THE CROW: SALVATION
    "Titles" (5:17) - HIGHWAY 395
    "Gangs of Chicago" (3:13) - I, ROBOT
"Mikey Doesn't Like It" (3:13) - UNDERWORLD: EVOLUTION
    "Heli-Ride" (3:37) - UNDERWORLD - EVOLUTION
"End Credits" (8:21) - RED EYE
"HB vs Sam The 2nd" (6:39) - HELLBOY (COMPLETE)
    "Scooter" (2:44) - THE OMEN

This was quite a good selection of Beltrami's stuff. Nice to start off with some emotional rather than bombastic scoring. But with The Crow: Salvation it wasn't long before Beltrami's trademark rhythms and sound designs came to the fore! The latter tracks were definitely full-on Beltrami. "Heli-Ride" is a cue that has everything that's good about Marco Beltrami's work.

  7. After the Beltrami set I listened to some JERRY GOLDSMITH (out of a possible 135):

"No Diamonds / End Title" - KING SOLOMON'S MINES
    "Katya" - THE RUSSIA HOUSE
    "Final Battle" - RAMBO III
    "The Air Lock" - OUTLAND
"It's A Long Road" - FIRST BLOOD (Great theme)
"My Land" - BAD GIRLS (The theme from this movie is another one of my favourite Goldsmith themes)
    "Remus" - STAR TREK: NEMESIS
"Life Is A Dream" - STAR TREK V: THE FINAL FRONTIER
"Home Flight" - RAMBO: FIRST BLOOD PART II
"Rebirth" - POLTERGEIST (one of Goldsmith's greatest achievements)

Both "Final Battle" and "The Air Lock" are, for me, two great examples of how good Goldsmith is at varying rhythms in a cue, keeping things interesting and building tension. Not many people do such a good job at this nowadays.

  11. This isn't an "ultimate Elliot Goldenthal" playlist but a 10-track random selection from the 51 favourite tracks from Goldenthal on my player:

"The Spirit Within / The Phantom Plains" - FINAL FANTASY: THE SPIRITS WITHIN (COMPLETE)
    "Lento" - ALIEN³
"Fox Fanfare / Agnus Dei" - ALIEN³
    "An Offering" - TITUS
"Funeral / Coda" - MICHAEL COLLINS
"Main Titles & Fanfare" - BATMAN FOREVER
"Louis' Revenge - INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE
"Fire and Arms" - MICHAEL COLLINS
    "The Homecoming" - COBB
    "Dies Irae" - DEMOLITION MAN

A very satisfying selection here. I love the "Agnus Dei" track with the modified Fox Fanfare tacked on at the beginning.

"Eliza Aria" - WILD SWANS - Elerna Kats-Chernin

"The Scorpion" - STAR TREK: NEMESIS - Jerry Goldsmith
"Krzyk Radosci" - KOCKANKOWIE ROKU TYGRYSA - Henri Seroka
"Wait" - THE THING - Ennio Morricone
"Main Theme" - DINOTOPIA - Trevor Jones

Quite a low-key selection here. I hadn't heard cues from Ride With The Devil or Life As A House in quite a while.

Good... goood. But diversification doesn't primarily mean listening to Golden Age scores, there's a lot of diversifying you could do with modern scores based on your list there.

    Storybook Ending - Enchanted
The Bridge Of Khazad Dum - LoTR Fellowship of the Ring

Shieldmaiden of Rohan - LoTR The Return of the King CR
For Frodo - LoTR The Return of the King CR

    - "Heroes" from Flyboys - Trevor Rabin
I know, I know, I know... but man, this is one meaty, heroic, ORCHESTRAL action setpiece. Shocked even me.

    - My "The Rocketeer" suite or "Rocketeer to the Rescue/End Title" - James Horner
One of Horner all time greatest works a some great, old fashion swashbuckling heroic music in there.

    - "Dar The Hero" from Beastmaster 2 - Robert Folk
This track contains my second all time favorite heroic theme next to The Raiders March.

    - "Evy Kidnapped" from The Mummy Returns - Alan Silvestri
Contains superb renditions of the O'Connell theme!

    - "The Jet Aircraft Facility" from Medal of Honor - Michael Giacchino
Great rendition of the games heroic main theme

    - "Main Theme" from Prince Valiant - Franz Waxman
One of the Golden Ages best action adventure scores.

    - "Willow's Theme" from Willow - James Horner
    'nuff said

    - "The Escape" from The Phantom - David Newman
One of the most underrated action scores out there featuring a glorious heroic main theme which gets a lot of play in this track

Anything from The Sea Hawk - Erich Korngold

    - "Main Theme" from Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves - Michael Kamen

    - Anything from CutThroat Island - John Debney
It's Only Gold would be a fine closing.

    - "End Titles" from ID4
    'nuff said

There's plenty more so I'll let others play.

    -Erik-

Now there's some good suggestions! Thankfully I have most of these too. ID4 and CutThroat Island I will probably leave out since I don't like to listen to them too often as not to ruin my enjoyment of them... they're to be savored! I can't believe I missed out The Sea Hawk though.
