Bregt usually posts about these things, but I got a PR mail a couple of days ago which said that Philippe Rombi is this year's guest-of-honour at the WSA.

Fine composer, so those of you in proximity should go. Personally, I cannot afford any travelling abroad (except maybe Denmark) in the foreseeable future.

Apparently, there will also be a James Horner tribute concert, according to the latest PR mail from WSA.

Yes! I usually do this but you are quicker. I blame it my age. wink

Very happy with the programme! Also, it's in the Bijloke. Great venue. Unfortunately it's in the week. But we'll make it a fine evening.

I'm going with every Belgian film music friend (Thomas, Gilles, Tim, Marie-Lise, my brother, Kaat, and others) to the Horner concert, we bought tickets a few hours after the announcement. I really want to go to the Rombi concert too but need to check babysit and find someone to join me!

    Hi Bregt!

I’ll be there for the Awards and the Horner concert. Let me know if you want to meet up, for old times sake!

I know everyone is having the time of their life in Ghent right now. I'm envious and sad. BUT, I would probably pep up if I saw some photos, so hopefully some of you took/will be taking some pictures.

I've chatted with Lee on JWFAN. He's also there, hopefully you will meet up with him and his friend Tom.

Umberto Scipione' win is doubtful. Then again, it is a public choice....

It was really a nice edition, two very fine concerts!

WSA awards ceremony was a bit boring, not very interesting, and in between concert sections, which got the tempo out of everything. Anyhow, the concert parts were excellent. Franglen, Goldenthal and Rombi all were present. Goldenthal was a bit older than previous time, and less drunk and with no sunglasses. Excellent selection for Goldenthal (Alien 3, Interview with a Vampire, Titus and Batman Forver) and Rombi (Joyeux Noel, Angel, Dans la Maison, Sous le Sable, Asterix)/ Rombi also performed on piano in Jeux d'Enfants. Rombi was very emotional and grateful for being there.

Goldenthal got introduced by a speech by Dirk Brossé that it got a bit cringy. Brossé is a big fan of Goldenthal and had to express that through bombast and adoration. Avatar 2 suite of about 20 minutes was quite spectacular sometimes. However, the movie looks awful.

The Horner concert was very well done. A fine programme, and an encore with music from The Mask of Zorro, which got everyone extra happy. Simon Franglen and Horner's wife were there. He told about the limited budget for Titanic of all things, where Franglen was helping Horner. Some other anekdotes dotted over the concert. Highlights were the Aliens suite, Ride of the Firemares, For the Love of a Princess and End Credits of the Rocketeers.

I met up with a lot of people (Thomas, Marie Lise, Maxime, ...) but I didn't find Lee, and I see I missed a PM here on the forum. Damned!

Thanks for the report, Bregt! I've noticed that people were very happy with the Horner concert, in particular. That's understandable, because it was a very strong program.

Any social get-togethers on any of the evenings, or are you all so old and family-oriented now that it was straight to bed?

Yes yes. Not as extended as it used to be, but we had a dinner before the Horner concert. After that some of us had some drinks but not very late. It is a bit sad that it all happens during the week and due to some personal situation my time was limited.

(my daughter was hospitalized for two weeks during that time, my wife couldn't join the concerts as someone of us both had to stay in the hospital every night, she wanted me to go to both of them even though it was her birthday on the Horner concert. We have some crazy weeks behind us)

Whoa, that's a lot at once! Hope your daughter is feeling better, and that things will calm down a bit (relatively speaking) in the time to come.

  1. Sorry to hear about your daughter Bregt. Hopefully things are getting back to normal.

Sorry to hear about your daughter Bregt, I hope she's ok.

Hang on, you've got a daughter??? Yes, it's been many years. dizzy

Shame you were literally there and we didn't meet. It would've been quite difficult to miss myself and Tom, we were creating mayhem in the foyer. And Hotsy Totsy afterwards was crazy. I had to climb over Martin Phipps to get out.

That's a funny image. I'm taken back to our drunken chats with David Julyan in that basement pub.

2024 really seemed like THE year to make a Ghent comeback after a 9-year absence, from everything I've read about the programme. And of course Lee's shenanigans. I'm sure Lee and I would have dragged those old, now-family-set Belgians into a good ol' allnighter if we had put our minds to it.

But as I've said several times before, I'm unable to travel anywhere at the moment. I can only afford THREE things a year -- one trip to my home town for summer, one trip to my home town for Christmas, and one trip to our summer house in Denmark for summer. That's it. Nothing more, nothing less. If there is more travelling than that, it would need to be covered by some entity (if it's work-related, for example). 2015 and Morocco was my last proper holiday abroad. I weep.
