  1. I include the question mark in the topic title to (obviously) keep the posts that follow about the pros and cons of the future of this forum.

Joep's excellent dedication to posting reviews here is to be commended and there should continue to be a place here for them.

But the forum? I think that it's about time we talk seriously about winding this messageboard down, and look into archiving the posts.

There's just nobody really posting any chat now. I was so disappointed to see the lack of engagement from the majority of old regulars to the post alerting people to Tom's death. I thought that that would have set off a flurry of comments and reminiscing. But no. For me that was really the signpost that there was no coming back from our current torpor.

So what do others think? And wouldn't it be ironic if a topic on closing the forum because of a lack of posting resulted in the most postings for quite some time.

I did ask this very question to Bregt in May last year, on Facebook Messenger, but received no response. It was probably too "brutal" for him to consider at the time. I just hope he wasn't offended!

I stand by what I said in a Zoom chat awhile back -- I think the only way to bring back some of the Maintitles flame is to completely eradicate and then start over somewhere else. Maybe even that won't work, but it's the last remaining thing to try.

Therefore, my suggestion to Bregt in that message was that we close the forum, leave the old messages up as an archive (and obviously the site itself where Joep can post his reviews), but then leave a message on the closed forum that forwards people to the Celluloid Tunes messageboard for further activity. That way, we get to "screen" whoever wants to have continued contact with the Maintitles crowd (they would then theoretically re-register there), and those who have moved on to other pastures for good (they will not re-register). It's brutal, but it's goodbye to the latter people forever, and a new hello to the hardcore Maintitlers.

We did move like this when we transferred from Scorereviews to Maintitles all those years ago (although the circumstances were different), and can do so again. It's the CROWD that's important, not which forum one uses.

Personally, I have moved permanently and exclusively to Celluloid Tunes, and although it's only a handful of people posting there at the present time, it's still more active than here. I was hoping to see you, Alan, and other Maintitlers partake more over there. We need more of that Maintitles DNA. And it won't happen as long as this forum stays open, in a maybe/maybe not limbo.
    I am extremely serious.

I think most people, here or almost anywhere else, have changed in their level of commitment regarding any messageboard. So, I do not see any valiable solution.

Unfortunately I think that your right. Messageboards seem to have had their day. FSM may be an exception rather than the rule.

Everyone used messageboards when they were the only interface people had to interact with fellow enthusiasts. But now there's lots of different ways to do it, several of them in real time.

Well, I, for one, refuse to give up, despite my hearing issues and what-have-you. I absolutely DETEST discussing on social media platforms like Facebook, and have rarely done it. There is still a space for us old-timers to discuss on messageboards, I think. But it requires radical solutions like the one I mentioned above. Even that may not work, but it's worth a shot.

In any case, we probably need Bregt to chime in. But I believe he's entrenched in family life at the moment.

  3. It's so strange, years I've stopped posting and writing reviews, now I'm actually writing new reviews. I've already written a lot of Michael Kamen, and plan to do most of his discography. So I would find it sad to stop this newly revised interest.

Also, I don't know why but visiting maintitles always gives me such nostalgia, and feels like home. On the other end, who is posting here except a person here or there?

Personally, I can't seem to let go of this place, but I'm responsible for not awakening the flame as well, since I'm not contributing enough (except the reviews I'm posting again)

However, to perhaps summarize it the best, the fact Maintitles is still alive and kicking on Google:
I'm selling my CD's online, my girlfriend (who knows nothing of fillmusic) is thereby doing research, to see what's high of value, and what's not. She did a search of Stagecoach (Jerry Goldsmith) and the first hit was ... my review of it on Maintitles smile

If that's not a sign Maintitles is still alive, I don't know what is wink
    waaaaaahhhhhhhh!!! Where's my nut? arrrghhhhhhh
  4. Maintitles' reviews are a valuable resource that should be retained for searchers such as your girlfriend to find and be educated (!).

And the nostalgia buzz can't be denied.

I was never a big poster here, but I must confess I forgot the name of the forum which is why I haven't been here for years. I just found it quite by chance whilst Googling for something else. Needless to say I have now bookmarked it.
  5. And it's with this, things can easily be set in motion wink

Hey. I'm defenitely one of the reasons this site is going nowhere community wise. Sorry for that. At the same time, that is how things go and family is indeed taking up a lot of my time. I still listen a lot to film music, but it is so different.

So I've been thinking about this as well.

    1. Forum concept is not a 2026 thing anymore. What could be the alternative? For me Celluloid Tunes is okay! But perhaps we need to think further and think about the regular message board. Perhaps more involvement with notifications and interactivity would trigger more responsive. Also a mobile version would be very useful.

    2. I don't want the reviews gone though so these I would let live.

    3. AI has changed my job entirely in just the period of a year. It helps me creating things so much faster. One of the things that has been in my mind the past few weeks is to create a new site with the help of AI but need some more thought in this. But that also triggers questions 1: what should the forum become?

    4. As an alternative for the board, we could setup a Discord channel for discussion, but that is something external. Not sure if people know or would like it.

  6. Thanks for the comments Bregt. A lot to mull over.

I don't know what would help or not. But I'm strongly against Discord. I can't find anything on that darn app.

Sorry for not being active these last few years. My family had a really stressful time with moving into another city and home and setting up our lives there. Everything's alright now, and I'm slowly getting back on my feet and into my original hobbies.

I'll try to be more active again in the future.
  7. I don't like Discord either. It's a bit like FSM's new messageboard - very off-putting to use.

Thanks for chiming in, Bregt! I totally understand how everyday life comes in the way.

To be honest, I'm a little bummed that none of you have elected to partake on Celluloid Tunes, but I can only surmise that it's because of a sense of allegiance to this particular board. I suppose that's understandable, in a nostalgic kind of way. My take, however, is that Maintitles folks are a mobile group that don't need to set themselves to any particular forum interface. We showed that when we moved from Scorereviews, and we showed that in the Zoom chats, at a time when the board itself was practically dead. We can exist all over the place. It's the people that matters, not where we are.

A move to CT would make more sense to me, because it has a "head start" with some 5-6 active members already, with which the Maintitles people could easily merge (it doesn't have to restart with zero on a new fancy platform).

Your alternative technical solutions probably make sense if one wants to recruit NEW members. I can see the point of that. But if the goal is to maintain the ones we ALREADY HAVE - to "re-ignite" them, so to speak - I don't think it matters that messageboard as a discussion platform is dying. We've all used it for many years, and many of us are more comfortable with that than with new solutions like Discord and what-have-you (I barely even know what Discord is).

Anyways, those are my two cents. Whatever you choose, I'll support it. The only thing I don't support is just "let it be" in its current state. For my part, I'm locked exclusively to the CT board for the foreseeable future (for health reasons, mostly), but I'd like to see the Maintitles spirit live on, in whatever fashion.
