Help for a web novice

This is driving me absolutely nuts:

Spry Validation. Works ok, but I'm trying to format the text fields so they change colour when they are valid/invalid. The problem is I can't for the life of me work out how to set the initial state of the textfield.

e.g. grey = initial, red = invalid, green = valid

The only options I can find in Dreamweaver are for valid and invalid states. If I simply apply CSS to the textfields to get the initial look right, the validation colours don't work.

I can't find anything on Google that relates to this either.

Any ideas?
