I've been listening to some of Edwin Astley's more better-known TV themes - the likes of The Saint, The Champions(?), Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased) and Department S - over the last few days and trawling YouTube hunting down the title sequences for these shows. And it's clear that he was able to compose very catchy themes. So, I thought that I'd start a thread.

    There's a good biopic here: http://www.screenonline.org.uk/people/id/771888/

Interesting fact about Astley is that he was born in Warrington, a town I used to live in for a few years and where fellow poster Dave currently resides.

YouTube seems to be a bit slow at the moment so I'll add some clips later for people who are not familiar with his work.

Going from memory Alan, I'm sure The Champions was written by Tony Hatch?!

Yes, it was. I have the theme for The Champions on my Zen player and Tony Hatch is down as the composer. Astley is cited as composing some music for the series.

    Yes, indeed Alan. wave

I can't remember where I first read about this and - shame on me rolleyes - I can't remember where he lived in Warrington and which school(s) he went to.

I suspect this'll only be of interest to me and Alan?

Damn fine quality scoring in this.

p.s. Alan, do you think you could edit out the 1922-1998 in the composer heading? Considering we don't have dates on other deceased composers topics it feels kind of inappropriate.

I recently ordered The Champions CD set directly from Network DVD - but I think that their store doesn't like my Opera browser. When I ordered the transaction with WorldPay went through just fine but there is no record of the order in my store account. sad

I now remember that this happened with my order for Department S. Network DVD were fine sorting it out then and I'm sure it'll be sorted out this time too. But it's just a pain when you expect a delivery, it doesn't arrive when expected, you check the order and then have to chase it up.
    sad

  4. The Champions 3-CD set...

I did have to chase Network DVD with a follow-up e-mail but the 2-day e-mail reply estimate came and went and I was falling into a deeper malaise regarding their customer service. So I decided to e-mail them again - and within 5-10 minutes they called me up on the phone to get things sorted out.

That call was greatly appreciated and things were sorted out. I've yet to receive the package but I am assured that it is now on its way!

Apparently, their system doesn't cope well with my Opera browser (or vis versa) and so there was a time out error at their end with my order - hence the payment being made but them not receiving the order (apparently they have the same issues with AOL.)

Hopefully, Royal Mail, UPS, TNT or whoever it is that now delivers our mail will deliver before Friday.

This 3-CD set was waiting for me when I got home this evening. So, I'm off to wallow in some nostalgia in the company of Robert Farnon, Edwin Astley, Albert Elms and Tony Hatch.
    cool

Network DVD is set to release a 4-CD set from the TV show The Saint:

    http://www.networkdvd.net/product_info. … ts_id=1154

Their previous - multiple CD - releases of The Champions, Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased) and Department S were a bit too comprehensive with usually 200+ tracks many of which clocked in at under 60 seconds in length. Which is why they went on to release "sampler" CDs featuring choice cuts from their current (and forthcoming?) catalogue of titles.

This excess has made me a bit reluctant to fork out the money again for so much music but the guys at Network DVD have posted on YouTube a 4+ suite of tracks:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OwoabG8MGwQ

And it sounds great!! Yes, it's only a very small fraction of what's on the 4-CD set and maybe if there's any of Astley's music from The Saint on these sampler CD(s) then that may be the better option. But, I'm a sucker for these shows I say as a child. And supporting these titles may mean that something like The Persuaders is more likely to appear in the future.
