I want Giacchino to do more other movies. Something different from the stupid action movies he has done so far. Or something else than the animated movies. He needs a drama!

But not just a drama. He did The Family Stone, and it's his most standard, uninteresting work to date. He needs an epic drama at least.

And he has done drama brilliantly as well. I know most of you haven't heard Semper Fi but I think it's one of Giacchino's finest scores. I think he NAILED the drama in The Family Stone. And he NAILS the drama in LOST every week.

Couldn't agree more. Imagine Ciacchino on UNITED 93!

I agree with what Steven said earlier.

Powell's United 93 is just fine and there's no need to imagine any one elses!

Very true. Powell got it right... and man oh man... he could have easily misfired. United 93 was probaby one of the most important and stressful assignments for ANY composer in the history of film scoring. And no, I'm not exaggerating.

Is there a way to hear some of the score outside the film?

Relax people, i am not talking about a replacement score, after all UNITED 93 is my dearest Powell score. I am just saying that i truly want to hear what Giacchino would come up with for such a movie.

Agree! An excellent and unbelievably poignant film was perfectly scored.

The film is brilliant though I'm not sure I could sit through it again.

I've been listing to the CD of the second season in the car today. I've always neglected this CD, but after listening to the third season score to death I thought I'd give it another listen.

Once again, Giacchino's use of themes and motifs has blown me away. There's some stuff later on in the album that is built upon during season 3 (one action motif in particular!) which is pretty darn impressive. It's quite a shock to hear something you're familiar with in a later season way back there!

Two shots in the foot for a season 4 release though - two highlight bits of music I've been longing after since seeing the season are actually found here.

*seasons 3 and 4 spoilers below*

''Eko Blaster'' is used when Michael is planning to set off the bomb on the boat.
''The Hunt'' is from Sayid's fight with Keamy (also a slightly different version is used when Desmond is trying to save Charlie from drowning in the season 3 finale)

    End of spoilers.

    And end of post. wink

I have great trouble imagining that. His music to me hasn't yet felt like it belongs in a world of real people - it's more tied to exaggerated characters of one sort of another. (This applies to THE FAMILY STONE as much as to RATATOUILLE.) The sensibility of his most dramatic scoring to date, LOST, applied to UNITED 93 would have been like pouring water on paper instead of setting it on fire.

  5. New Yorker music critic Alex Ross (author of the excellent recent book THE REST IS NOISE), spoke approvingly of some of Giacchino's choices in scoring LOST in this 2005 column:

Some of the most compelling film music of the past year appeared not on the big screen but on the small one. Michael Giacchino’s score for the TV show “Lost”—the tale of several dozen plane-crash survivors marooned on a vaguely supernatural, “Tempest”-like island—has unsettled millions of American viewers with an eerie array of orchestral sounds: fluttery four-note figures, shivery tones produced by bowing strings near the bridge, nasty glissandos on the trombone, and, at moments of maximum tension, a low plucked note on the harp. According to convention, harps are called upon to herald angels or other vessels of goodness. Giacchino makes the instrument gaunt and deathly, much as Mahler did in the last song of “Das Lied von der Erde.” In general, Giacchino has done such a bang-up job of generating menace that the scriptwriters may have a hard time satisfying the expectations that he has created. Something mighty grim will have to crawl out of that lush jungle in order to justify those twangs of terror.

Excellent article! It's very satisfying to see other people acknowledging the unusually high-quality work that has been done for LOST on behalf of Giacchino, and especially when laid-down in this manner, with such arguments. It's certainly Tv-music as it's never been done before and that's a major credit to Giacchino in these times of fast-food electronic approach to everything.

  6. I guess it's being organic and primal at once. Atonal musical scores for small orchestral ensembles don't happen often in TV series, that's a fact.

Well, he did work on Fringe with Chad Seiter. The first episode ONLY.

And he helped write the score to the video game FRACTURE along with Tilton and Chad Seiter.
