    BRAND NEW EPISODE!

THE FLAGSHIP SHOW: LA LA LAND RECORDS PRESENTS… EPISODE ONE

    http://www.cinematicsound.net/la-la-lan … isode-one/

On today’s episode of THE FLAGSHIP SHOW, we resurrect a themed show that we started producing back in the early 2000s when this very record label was established. La La Land Records has been around since 2002 and since then we’ve produced dozens of shows dedicated exclusively to the label. We’ve also had partnerships with other labels including FILM SCORE MONTHLY, VARESE SARABANDE, KRONOS RECORDS, etc but over the years but these record label themes programs started to wane after a while. The last show dedicated solely to La La Land Records was back in June of 2012.

So, today, we thought we’d give this other go. La La Land Records has kindly supplied the program with some of their more recent releases and we’ll include a score from their back catalogue as chosen by you on Twitter.

On the program today you’ll hear selections from FAR AND AWAY by John Williams, SLIVER with music by Howard Shore and additional music by Christopher Young, MYSTERY MEN by Stephen Warbeck with additional music by Shirley Walker, POINT BREAK by Mark Isham, and CASPER by James Horner. Plus, we’ll pay tribute to one of the greatest guitar heroes of all time, Eddie Van Halen, who lost his battle with cancer on October 6th. We will spin the track “Respect The Wind” from TWISTER in his honour.

A big thank you to MV Gerhard and Matt Verboys at La La Land Records and Tim Burden for making this show possible.

    NEW EPISODE

    SOUNDTRACK ALLEY: ALIEN
    http://www.cinematicsound.net/soundtrack-alley-alien/

The fifth episode of SOUNDTRACK ALLEY here on CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO is a discussion between Erik Woods and Randy Andrews about the film and score of the 1979 Ridley Scott directed sci-fi/horror/thriller, ALIEN, starring Tom Skerritt, Sigourney Weaver, Veronica Cartwright, Harry Dean Stanton, John Hurt, Ian Holm, and Yaphet Kotto. The film tells the story of the crew of the commercial space tug Nostromo, who encounters an aggressive and deadly Alien creature who is set loose on the ship.

The original score for the film was composed by Jerry Goldsmith, performed by The National Philharmonic Orchestra, and conducted by Lionel Newman. The original soundtrack recording was initially released on 20th Century Records on LP in 1979. The expanded edition release of the score was produced by Intrada Records and was released in 2007.

So, I'm trying a new kind of show where I don't script any of it. I just ramble on about various film, TV and video music topics and play a little music. I uploaded the pilot episode today and I would really like it if you would have a listen and offer some honest feedback. Ad libbing isn't my area of expertise and I just want to make sure that this is worth continuing. Thanks.

It's a good idea, Erik. I'm only scripting my English-language episode. All my Norwegian episodes are "ad lib", and it makes for more dynamic, casual flow (although more of a hassle to edit, of course).
    I am extremely serious.

I like listening to traditional radio programs on subjects such world politics. Some of them also extend their views through podcasts, which are equally interesting. Unfortunately, some of these programs, the ones that deal with daily news subjects, play random music in between them, which I detest. It may sound silly, but podcasts on (film) music irritate me as much, because I only want the talk and no music, even though it is more relevant in a show about music. I would like to prefer links to specific musical pieces on the website of the show.

So, podcasts on (film) music kind of delude me. I have occasionally listened to some of your shows, but I could never really connect to them. Whenever I read a review, an article or interview as a text, it helps me to immediately browse through them, decide what parts to value. Some podcasts allow you to skip to parts in which a certain subject is discussed, which is good, but I can still not be sure any of it is interesting to me. I generally feel like I have lost a lot of time by listening to a podcast on music which may only have 5 minutes of worth interesting information. The thing is, it is likely you provide some interesting talk, but the time it takes me to listen to all these shows, is simply not worth my time.

Yet, I like the idea of non-scripted shows. This tryout is relatively more interesting, regardless of all my earlier remarks. Note, I only listened for about 30 minutes.
  1. Joep, I understand your comment about not needing to hear the music and I find a similar feeling for many of the podcasts I have listened to - but that's mostly because I am familiar with the music that is being played. I would much rather listen to a discussion about the music I am already familiar with.

That's one of the reasons I enjoyed Erik's 'ad lib' show so much. He opened talking about his problems finding specific CDs in his collection and touched upon the issue of how to arrange his CDs - common problems I have had over the years. And I enjoyed hearing his frustrations (that sounds bad!) and how he resolved it.

One of the other things I liked was how he spoke of situations where you wanted to hear the tracks he played because of the subject he raised. Sound effects in tracks, rerecordings vs. original tracks - what he said had me wanting me to hear the tracks then and there to hear what he was talking about. And then hearing what he had to say afterwards. From a personal point of view, hearing one of his rerecording examples had be going straight after his show to listen to the original tracks in order to 'cleanse' myself of what I had heard in the rerecording!

For me, the show was at its best when it had a feel of an informal zoom chat. But, because of that, it was frustrating when I couldn't just pitch in there-and-then with a counter-argument on a comment. But that's what makes the zoom chats themselves so enjoyable.

Interesting. I usually find the music supportive of the arguments or points the host is trying to make, that why none of the tracks on my show are "random" with the exception of the last track I play on this show, which was a purely random track that kind of played along with the theme of the show where I was making it up as I went along. wink

That's fair and I've heard from others over the years who feel the same. Why listen to a film music podcast when I already own the music myself? I get it. And usually, that annoys me when the host/DJ has nothing to say about the score/music. Anyone can say the name of the film and the composer and play some music. To me that's boring therefore what I do is very different to that, even though it's formatted somewhat the same. More on that below.

I'm not going to speak about other podcasts - they can do whatever they please - but on my show, I'm always trying to inject as much info about the film and score as possible in my commentaries to help validate the reason for playing a particular score on my show. While my show is more of a traditional radio broadcast (DJ and music) rather than a film music lecture (The Soundtrack Show), I still feel the need to make sure I'm keeping my audience interested, informed, engaged and entertained, even if it is the six-thousandth time they've heard Star Wars. wink I understand that this is not your cup of tea, which is fine, but I just wanted to let you know what makes my show a bit different than the others.

Tora! Tora! Tora!, right? But I agree with you, Alan. And I think I mentioned this as well in my retort to Joep. Playing random music or any music at all in a podcast or radio program without context is boring so I'm glad you found value in the tracks that I played on the program to help support my arguments.

They should be all the same. However, I have noticed that if you don't have a paid account with Spotify that might not sound as good as someone with a paid account. But for the most part, they all sound the same. They shouldn't be compressing the sound on their end, IMO. I encode at 160k for a reason.

NEW EPISODE OF CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO

TRAILER MUSIC WRITTEN BY THE FILM’S COMPOSER
    http://www.cinematicsound.net/the-flag- … -composer/

On today’s new episode of THE FLAGSHIP SHOW on CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO NETWORK, Erik Woods presents custom trailer music written by the film’s composer.

Before we get into the music you will hear a brief history of the movie trailer. For this section, Erik has referenced portions of Matthew Schimkowitz’s essay published on hopesandfear.com called AN EPIC HISTORY OF THE MOVIE TRAILER. We thank Matt for being so cooperative in allowing us to quote portions of his extremely well-researched essay in the program.

Afterwards, you will then hear suites featuring the trailer music of John Debney (LAIR, THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST), Jerry Goldsmith (RAMBO: FIRST BLOOD PART II, EXTREME PREJUDICE), and John Williams (BACHELOR FLAT, 1941, HARRY POTTER AND THE PHILOSOPHER’S STONE, NIXON).

You’ll also hear a video game suite featuring music by Jack Wall (MYST III: EXILE), Gareth Coker (ORI AND THE BLIND FOREST) and Chad Seiter (RECORE). We’ll then move onto Golden Age trailers including music by Max Steiner (THE ADVENTURES OF DON JUAN) and Erich Wolfgang Korngold (THE SEA HAWK)

The show then ends with selections by David Newman (HOFFA) and James Horner (TITANIC). And there will be numerous surprises sprinkled throughout the show.

  4. I really enjoyed your episode Erik! A really fun idea. My favorite trailer music of the bunch was Alive (wish there was more of it, loved the momentum compared to the more subtle sounds on the album) and of course The Sea Hawk...I mean come on, is there any more perfect trailer music than that? Amazing! And I forgot what a good score Hoffa is, so I'll be revisiting that one soon! Thanks for all the research you did! Fascinating!

NEW EPISODE OF CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO

SOUNDTRACK ALLEY: LEGEND - PART ONE
    http://www.cinematicsound.net/soundtrac … -part-one/

The ninth episode of SOUNDTRACK ALLEY here on CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO features a bit of a different format than other SOUNDTRACK ALLEY episodes. Regular host, Randy Andrews, decided to skip this episode and left it up to Erik Woods to host and moderate a roundtable discussion about the film, LEGEND.

Joining Erik is the host of THE ARCHIVE, Jason Drury, host of OBSCURE SCORES, Robert Daniels and CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO’s in-house composer and host of COMPOSER CONVERSATIONS, David Coscina.

The original score for the film was composed and conducted by Jerry Goldsmith, performed by The National Philharmonic Orchestra and recorded by the legendary Mike Ross-Trevor. However, due to the massive changes made from the European version to the American version of the film, it was decided to remove Goldsmith’s score and have the German electronic group, Tangerine Dream, write and perform a new score.

In part one of our look at the production of LEGEND and the use of music in both versions, Erik, Jason, Robert and David talk about various topics including when they first saw the film, which version of the film they like, the film’s production design, the gorgeous cinematography, Ridley Scott’s history as a director, a comparison of Jerry Goldsmith’s and Tangerine Dream’s scores and a detailed comparison of “The Unicorn” sequence, which Goldsmith and Tangerine Dream both scored.
In addition, David Coscina’s participation in this discussion offers a unique perceptive to the program as he brings his expertise as a composer to the table and provides detailed musical analysis of both scores and performs specific sections of each score on his piano to help paint a clear picture as to what the Jerry Goldsmith and Tangerine Dream were bringing to the film.

Jerry Goldsmith’s original motion picture score is available on Silva Screen Records and Tangerine Dreams score is available through Varese Sarabande Records.

Part two of the program, where we compare more cues from each score, will be made available shortly.
