JAMES NEWTON HOWARD

The middle section is a worrying omen of how the action music will be handled (not dissimilar to Desplat's work on HP VII Part 2) but I really liked the opening and especially the closing. I also liked his alternating 5/8, 7/8 ostinato running throughout the cue. -

SIGNS SCORE GUIDE
via Sideshow Sound Theatre Radio
I had the pleasure to join the fine folks over at SIDESHOW SOUND THEATRE RADIO to discuss in detail James Newton Howard's brilliant score to SIGNS. It's a hefty two-hour program but if you love SIGNS as much as I do you'll make it a priority to listen.

Enjoy!

Sounds cool, Erik. Doing more detailed, analytical shows is something I've been toying with myself (finally making use of all those years of scholarly research).
By the way, If you love to enter the world of SIGNS on an extreme micro-level, check out the mammoth, 4-part article by my colleague Dag Sødholt (in English):

Funnily enough, I dreamt about Mel Gibson tonight. I was showing him around in the town where I grew up...I am extremely serious. -

While you were showing him around, did he see the signs? The views and opinions of Ford A. Thaxton are his own and do not necessarily reflect the ones of ANYONE else. -

JNH is doing a European tour next year with "3 Decades of Music for Hollywood", a concert in which he himself also is conductor.

I know he'll be performing in Antwerp (11 November), Geneve (3 December) and Bilboa. Other dates will appear later.
I ordered tickets for Antwerpen (saturday 11-11). Closer than Amsterdam for me.
Now we wait. For one year... -

I hope the rest is as good as these tracks imply. This is exactly the sort of film JNH is made for. -

Everything I've heard so far sounds like people are being blown away by this score. I'm surprised, we haven't had JNH really do anything above-average in years. -

Were you absent when he wrote Maleficent?

MALEFICENT is far superior of FANTASTIC BEASTS, at least what I've heard so far. Don't get me wrong, there are some smokin' good tracks on BEASTS, but after hearing the whole thing, it sorta falls inbetween the cracks of everything; a bit too whimsical for its own good.I am extremely serious. -

I agree that MALEFICENT is stronger. Those last few tracks on FANTASTIC BEASTS are really good, but there are quite a few tracks all through the album that just didn't do much, imo. -

I admit I completely forgot about Maleficent. There's something about that album that makes me uncomfortable and I've never really managed to include it in my mental JNH pantheon along with his older great scores. Not really sure why? -

Didn't know Graham Norton had a radio show But nice interview - hope to go to one of the concerts. -
- CommentTimeNov 13th 2016
That was rather a good interview. Nice to hear James in a more relaxed, light-hearted environment. He always seemed a bit 'serious' in his nature in other interviews.
Definitely going to that concert though! -

JNH is actually in Stockholm right now, for the film festival there. I considered going, but I didn't have accreditation to the festival, and I've already had an interview with him, so I decided against it. But nice to see him in our neck of the woods!I am extremely serious. -

Ah, so that's what Stockholm syndrome is -- when you don't have accreditation. The views and opinions of Ford A. Thaxton are his own and do not necessarily reflect the ones of ANYONE else. -

Feel like I'm spamming the board this afternoon but did anyone pick up the Intrada release of 'Collateral' earlier this year? Any thoughts on the score? -

Film is decent and watched it twice. The score made no impression but I haven't heard it on its own.On Friday I ate a lot of dust and appeared orange near the end of the day ~ Bregt -

The majority of the score was dropped from the film and replaced with scoring by other people and some tracked stuff, so watching the film wouldn't help. The views and opinions of Ford A. Thaxton are his own and do not necessarily reflect the ones of ANYONE else. -

The film is more than decent; it's bloody brilliant!
The score is pretty good too -- I owned a promo for some time; typical JNH in urban mode, which is a mode he does extremely well.I am extremely serious. -

Next JNH projects are:
Jumanji (2017) - adventure/fantasy - Directed by Jake Kasdan
Inner City (2017) - drama - Directed by Dan Gilroy
Red Sparrow (2017) - spy thriller - Directed by Francis Lawrence
The Nutcracker and the Four Realms (2018) - adventure/fantasy - Directed by Lasse Hallström
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them 2 (2018) - fantasy/adventure/magic - Directed by David Yates
Some interesting projects, as a JNH fan I'm excited by all of these. -

Yeah, looking forward to that.
I just declined a phone interview with JNH tomorrow. Several reasons, mostly to do with time, but I'm hoping to do one when he gets to Oslo in one year's time.I am extremely serious.
