I've seen the process required to access the hard disk. It does look somewhat convoluted.
So, does swapping the drive to another laptop mean that electronics of the new laptop just access the substituted hard drive?
Yes, unless you're trying to put it in a much older laptop (that might not be able to run the operating system). The hard drive is the soul. Everything else is about accessing and processing the information held on it.
Yes, indeed, except perhaps some hardware drivers might not be installed. But it can work. However, you can also buy a USB-to-hard disk connector for example, and use this to to connect your hard disk with an other laptop/pc and recover what you need.

I suspect your motherboard is broken (how old is your pc?) when you have no reaction. Does the battery light light up?Kazoo -

The laptop is 4-5 years old I think, maybe more. Nothing at all lights up. The light on the charger even goes out when I plug it into the computer. Someone's having a look at it to see if they can track the problem down. The views expressed in this post are entirely my own and do not reflect the opinions of maintitles.net, or for that matter, anyone else. http://www.racksandtags.com/falkirkbairn -

Now the PC I am using, whilst my laptop is away being looked at, is running a CHKDSK (and hangs) every time it boots.

After 6 hours of the PC running a CHKDSK, it seems to have sorted itself out.
There were a couple of files that it flagged up as being "unlinked" and that it seemed to fix.The views expressed in this post are entirely my own and do not reflect the opinions of maintitles.net, or for that matter, anyone else. http://www.racksandtags.com/falkirkbairn -

Hmmm. Good. But always a bit frustrating. I guess a sector on the hard disk is broken or damaged. This happens because it gets older of course. Glad the check disk worked. Computer problems are always frustrating because it could be anything (at least to me!).
How is the laptop?Kazoo -

The problem has been traced to a bad motherboard. I am not going to take the gamble and just replace it - who know what else might show up. And the laptop is getting on a bit. So, going to try and get some data off the hard drive that wasn't backed up and get a new laptop.
Not sure what to get though. I liked my Dell Inspiron so may try and get another. Or maybe an HP - some good deals about. Looking to spend £400-450 (max). The views expressed in this post are entirely my own and do not reflect the opinions of maintitles.net, or for that matter, anyone else. http://www.racksandtags.com/falkirkbairn -

Ah the motherboard... Quite ciritical for a computer.
As for a new laptop. You can't do much wrong with a good brand like HP or Sony. If it's only for music, internet and Word/Excel/... then you don't need anything fancy.Kazoo -

I would recommend Acer, personally (affordable and stable computers). I've had a HP, and while it was OK to use, it had ONE big issue -- the fan was only at the bottom of the laptop, causing constant over-heating. My Acer model, however, also has a fan on the side, which makes everything smoother. Maybe this is customary by now (and perhaps even HP has adressed this issue), but worth thinking about.I am extremely serious. -

In my family there are currently three different Asus laptops in use. They do all right. To be honest I bought mine without doing any research for the sole reason that it was a current bargain. The only thing I considered was that it was to be an office machine and no gaming platform.

If anyone's interested...transferring data off my old laptop's hard drive and onto home PC in readiness for arrival of new laptop. Located the emails containing the license keys for my most important purchased software. Optimistic that inconvenience of the old laptop will hopefully be kept to a minimum.

I used to have a Dell Dimension PC which lasted seven years (nearly to the day). I also used to have a Dell Inspiron laptop, which died after nearly a decade, but only because I fried its brain - it was entirely my own fault.
I now have an Acer PC, which has been pretty good. It doesn't always boot first time, but I think that's because I've got an external drive hanging off it permenantly, and I think it gets confused as to which drive to boot from. Otherwise it's performed splendidly and reliably. (That said... whilst I believe in the brand, I bought it because I ran out of choice and time. My pc had been struggling so I started looking online to buiy a new one; either directly from Dell or one those build-your-own-pc websites. But then my old pc stopped working altogether at a very crucial time and I simply drove to PC World and bought the best thing I could afford. No regrets though. I have since doubled its ram and have upgraded to an ssd drive.)
At work we have Lenovo laptops. Very reliable but (much like HP and Sony) I think they are relatively more expensive than Dell or Acer.www.synchrotones.wordpress.com | www.synchrotones.co.uk | @Synchrotones | facebook | soundcloud | youtube -

I lied earlier... not deliberately. I don't have an Acer, I have an Asus, LOL. Close though.
The irony of all this pc shopping is that, whilst we attribute great value to the name Dell or Asus or Sony... ultimately the processor is Intel, the memory is Kingston, the harddrive is Western Digital, the cd rom probably HP or something.... end o' day, all pc's are a medly of different brands.www.synchrotones.wordpress.com | www.synchrotones.co.uk | @Synchrotones | facebook | soundcloud | youtube -

My computer knowledge stops at a certain point.
Now, for example, I turn it on only to discover that the damn "Update to Windows 10" logo is jammed back in the taskbar! And now I don't remember what I did the last time, to remove it.I am extremely serious. -

Anyone who still uses Windows Update on a regular basis have a problem with installing Windows Update KB3065987?
The error code - which seems to be completely useless for finding information - is 80004005.
I've tried a few times now but it just seems to bail out when trying to install the update. The views expressed in this post are entirely my own and do not reflect the opinions of maintitles.net, or for that matter, anyone else. http://www.racksandtags.com/falkirkbairn -

I upgraded my Laptop to Windows 10 this morning. So far everything is fine. Yet I never had much trouble with any Win version in contrast to others.

I might wait until SP1 becomes available for Windows 10. I am just getting used to Windows 8 (with my slight modifications to make it seem more like Windows 7).The views expressed in this post are entirely my own and do not reflect the opinions of maintitles.net, or for that matter, anyone else. http://www.racksandtags.com/falkirkbairn -

I have (another) question about updating to Windows 10.
I've just got my new Windows 8.1 laptop up-and-running, having re-installed most of the software (free and paid-for). If I update to Windows 10 will I have to re-install the programs again, or does the new OS just replace the old OS and leave my files and programs intact? The views expressed in this post are entirely my own and do not reflect the opinions of maintitles.net, or for that matter, anyone else. http://www.racksandtags.com/falkirkbairn -

You can check it through the update you were getting rid of (the GWX), but most probably you can retain everything you had, it's even the default option.
You do not need to make a clean install of Windows 10 at all. Though I guess that's why the upgrade takes longer.http://www.filmmusic.pl - Polish Film Music Review Website -

So am I. Yet I had to manually patch the driver of my sound card to regain full functionality and I had to un- und reinstall the Bluetooth driver. Today I had to reboot the system in order to synch my classic iPod. Not sure if this had to do with W10. While the driver issues did not pose a real problem for me for the average user they might.

My problem was Spotify, which I uninstalled through the Safe Mode, though maybe a (highly difficult to go into) Control Panel would do the trick...http://www.filmmusic.pl - Polish Film Music Review Website -

Sorry, but this doesn't make it any easier to understand!
I did read that from Windows 8.1 there shouldn't be much effect on files or programs. The views expressed in this post are entirely my own and do not reflect the opinions of maintitles.net, or for that matter, anyone else. http://www.racksandtags.com/falkirkbairn
