Callery´s score is part of "24". He has created a unique sound for the show; you can like it or not, but it´s part of the series now, and I think he should stay until the end.

While I agree he should stay, it's going to be the same as every other year. And the season 6 score was arguably the weakest. -

What I'm interested in is WHY you think there should have been a different composer attached to the project.
Howard Shore vs. James Newton Howard --> Lord of the Rings
Because honestly, I think every good composer who is given four years time could have come up with the complexity Shore got. I don´t say his score is bad, I´m far from saying that. I really, really like it, BUT I think if you give JNH four years you will get something you´re never gonna forget. If he´s inspired (like with Shyamalan movies), he creates truly astonishing stuff, moving, terrifying, touching.
Just imagine the violins from The Village associated with the Shire.
Imagine The Egg Travels from Dinosaur being played while the Fellowship travels along the western hills of the Misty Mountains.
Imagine Tooth and Claw from King Kong to be the score for the fight in Balin´s Tomb.
Imagine The Hand of God Part 1 from Signs associated with Sam´s fight against Shelob.
Imagine how that awesome triumphant theme during the fight against the orange man from Unbreakable would have worked with Sam lifting up Frodo for the final steps on Mount Doom.
Then imagine JNH having four years time to write something even better suited... -

Interesting... that seems to fit. And to be honest, I don't like Shore's squiggly violins in the Shelob and Doors of Durin tracks, I feel JNH could have delivered better action music. But I *LOVE* the rest of Shore's work so I'm satisfied with it! -

I´ve got something funny for you.

Around 3:37 (it depends on how good the video plays), start Tooth and Claw.
Enjoy. -

*************!!!!LOTR SPOILER ALERT!!!!**********
Hey Ralph, that fit in almost perfectly! Though few parts of it naturally sounded a bit oddwith the video, most of it was seamless, especially the part with the troll stalking Frodo around the pillar and when Legolas kills it (that was absolutely seamless!! ). Shore's music for this scene is terrific, too! -

Agreed. Probably not in this decade after all It's a phenomenal piece of work, especially RoTK.
This thread is just for alternate opinions anyway Actually when some TV programmes here come up (my computer is right now in the TV room) I turn on my favourite score on headphones to see how much I can match it to the action on the TV! And weirdly they often match very well like in this case, hehe -

Again, this is not about me thinking Shore did something wrong. As I said, I like his scores very much, even if I think some of his themes were not completely... complete. I remember hearing the Fellowship Theme for the first time and thinking that there was something not quite right about it. I needed some time to really warm up to the score for Fellowship, but at some point, it really got deep into me, and, of course I really love some of the tracks for the trilogy to death. Breaking of the Fellowship is perfect, the themes scoring anything elvish are great, and I really, really adore that Gondor theme.
But this is about alternatives, and if I had the choice, I would have given the job to JNH. -

Most of this thread is yawner-riffic because anyone can post a list. What I'm interested in is WHY you think there should have been a different composer attached to the project. Why Jerry Goldsmith for Lost In Space instead of Bruce Broughton? What would the other composer have brought to the project that the other composer didn't, etc.
Right now the only one I can think of is Alan Silvestri for Pirates of the Carribean over Badelt/Zimmer. While the MV/RC sound worked for some of you, it's generic as all hell. At least Zimmer made a massive improvement for the last film but that film sucked donkey balls. I would have loved to have heard a classic, old fashioned, swashbuckler for the first Pirates with a sense of humor. I think it would make revisiting the film a bit more bearable.

Ok, here it goes. Williams for Hulk because I think it would be interesting to hear how he scores a more darker superhero film ( unlike superman and Indy... )
Powell because after listening to Hog Chase on Paycheck I think he would given the new series of Bond-films a totaly new twist. ( on the rocks, shaken but not stirred )
Goldenthal for Rescue dawn because any Goldenthal score is always more interesting than the other more mainstream flicks. Rescue Dawn could've given the composer the opportunity to explore more of the territory he did on 'Vietnam Oratorio'
With the SUPER visuals of 'Elizabeth - The Golden age' I think Desplat would've done a top noch job!!! He's good with drama and large scale scenery. So I think that woul've resulted in a little gem!
Clint Mansell because this guy is talented but doesn't get commisioned enough I think. Reservation Road would've given the composer the opportunity to write more of his dramatic yet modern and eclectic kinda music. It would've been certainly more interesting than the thirty-three-something score of Isham in 2008!!!
I love Jamen Newton Howard's extraordinary talent. I think with Nim's Island under his belt we would've had a score between Dinosaur and Unbreakable... anyone?
Randy Edelman can do good stuff. I think his work on Dragonheart remains great stuff! So why not national treasure 2? I think he would've been a perfect choice... On the other hand. ANY other composer would've done better than Trevor Fucking Rabin (pardon my french)
Harry Gregson Williams for Kung-fu Panda because I think Gregson Williams has more sense of humour than Zimmer & Powell combined. It's all about timing and I think on that account Williams does better. His input to Shrek & co certainly maid those flicks works!
Happy Steven?

Wouldn't HGW's score have basically "sounded" the same as Zimmer and Powell's?

Any Williams score for (almost)any film is welcome by me, so I agree of course! (Although I love Elfman's score, so I'm not sure if I would have preferred a Williams score.)
Powell because after listening to Hog Chase on Paycheck I think he would given the new series of Bond-films a totaly new twist. ( on the rocks, shaken but not stirred )
This one has been discussed a few times in the past, so you're definitely not alone on that one. I for one am glad Arnold is still on board for the new Bond films, but I would be far from disappointed if Powell got the gig.
Goldenthal for Rescue dawn because any Goldenthal score is always more interesting than the other more mainstream flicks. Rescue Dawn could've given the composer the opportunity to explore more of the territory he did on 'Vietnam Oratorio'
100% agree! This would seem like the perfect type of film for Goldenthal, one that deals with such dramatic and harrowing themes. He would have elevated that film far beyond anything Badelt came up with.
With the SUPER visuals of 'Elizabeth - The Golden age' I think Desplat would've done a top noch job!!! He's good with drama and large scale scenery. So I think that woul've resulted in a little gem!
Again, I agree.
I love Jamen Newton Howard's extraordinary talent. I think with Nim's Island under his belt we would've had a score between Dinosaur and Unbreakable... anyone?
Perhaps, it's certainly a good chance he would have produced some very fine cues in between some mickey-mousing. Though I've not seen the film, so I wouldn't know.
Randy Edelman can do good stuff. I think his work on Dragonheart remains great stuff! So why not national treasure 2? I think he would've been a perfect choice... On the other hand. ANY other composer would've done better than Trevor Fucking Rabin (pardon my french)
The second score needed a more traditional approach since they went for a more traditional style of adventure film. I like the real non-CGI approach to a lot of the film, and Rabin's score just jarred with that style.
Harry Gregson Williams for Kung-fu Panda because I think Gregson Williams has more sense of humour than Zimmer & Powell combined. It's all about timing and I think on that account Williams does better. His input to Shrek & co certainly maid those flicks works!
Disagree. Powell has a far better sense of humour in his music, just listen to his score in Mr. & Mrs. Smith - he got that perfect. HGW bores me most of the time, and I for one am glad Zimmer and Powell got to score this film. A nice surprise score for 2008.
Happy Steven?
Peachy. -

well, you're both right... would it matter that much? it remains the same media venture way of working ( with an oriental touch ). but even the main title seems a chinese version of Shrek's action theme!
But on the other hand... you're right with Powell though. You made me think of dr seuss score and indeed, that score is funny as hell!!!!
So it's nice to compromise different thoughts! a great thread btw !

I must say that though Goldenthal is a great choice too, Badelt's score was really nice, at least to me.
With the SUPER visuals of 'Elizabeth - The Golden age' I think Desplat would've done a top noch job!!! He's good with drama and large scale scenery. So I think that woul've resulted in a little gem!
Agreed. I can kinda imagine how Desplat's score would sound like though Armstrong and Rahman's score had its good moments too.
I love Jamen Newton Howard's extraordinary talent. I think with Nim's Island under his belt we would've had a score between Dinosaur and Unbreakable... anyone?
JNH would've been a great choice. Doyle's score was good but I didn't feel it suited his style. He's better off with epic and fantasy style like Hp GoF and Eragon
Randy Edelman can do good stuff. I think his work on Dragonheart remains great stuff! So why not national treasure 2? I think he would've been a perfect choice... On the other hand. ANY other composer would've done better than Trevor Fucking Rabin (pardon my french)
I for one loved Rabin's score to both the National Treasure scores, though it fits Edelman's bill as well. He's scoring Mummy 3 now so we're gonna get that styled score soon anyway. Cannot wait for it!!
Harry Gregson Williams for Kung-fu Panda because I think Gregson Williams has more sense of humour than Zimmer & Powell combined. It's all about timing and I think on that account Williams does better. His input to Shrek & co certainly maid those flicks works!
No, siree; Powell and Zimmer's score fitted the movie like a glove (at least from the little bit I watched on a pirated DVD channel running on the TV one day, the movie isn't even released here yet ) HGW did a great job on Shrek, no doubt, but ethnic type scores are Hans' best area. Look how well he handled Lion King ("King of Pride Rock"), Prince Of Egypt ("Chariot Race") and Gladiator ("Marrakesh marketplace"). Add Powell Power and you've got one addictive score
But anyway you've got nice opinions, man! -
- CommentTimeJun 30th 2008
Harry Gregson Williams for Kung-fu Panda would result in an even more generic and boring score whilst Rescue Dawn was a gorgeous score that elevated the movie greatly, i wouldn't change a thing. As for Randy Edelman, normally i can't stand more than 5 minutes of his music. On the rest we agreeLove Maintitles. It's full of Wanders. -
