    Michael Nyman on Facebook:
remembers that one day, years ago, James Cameron phoned to ask me whether I was interested in writing the soundtrack for a film he making about the sinking of the Titanic. I said, yes, but since Gavin Bryars had been 'compiling' his performance/research piece 'The Sinking of the Titanic' since 1971, that he should somehow be involved as well. Neither of us made it onto the soundtrack deck and the rest, as they say, is history.

He didn't knew who James Cameron was at that stage yet. biggrin

EDIT: I see James posted something in Horner's thread about this as well.

He didn't know who James Cameron was? Somehow, from Michael Nyman I believe it.

Does anyone have (heard) Michael Nyman's The Piano Concerto? Has this been released?

Just heard the first movement on YouTube. I thought it was fabulous! When the variation of A Wild and Distant Shore comes in (2:40), I'm in a Nyman heaven!

On a side note, Nyman's The Burning from The Claim (one of my favourite tracks of all time) was the soundtrack to my holiday the past two weeks. smile

Yes. The Piano Concerto was released on the ARGO label. It also contains one of my all time favourite Nyman works, MGV, the piece is something to do with the French high speed train.

It's also available on Nyman's own label. Here's some clips:

Of Nyman's MGV, "5th Region" is my favourite segment:

The last half of this movement, particularly when the strings kick in against that ostinato raises goosebumps every time.

I was just wondering if you've ever heard his 'Water Dances' from the album THE KISS ( AND OTHER MOVEMENTS ), another work that would fit very well with train images and another one of my all time favourite Nyman pieces.

There's an 11-minute track on the "Essential Michael Nyman Band" CD from Argo that I have. Called "Stroking...Synchronising" it's one that I haven't listened to much over the years.

Oh I forgot about that version, it's BRILLIANT! Much faster than the version on KISS, I find this one of the most uplifting and exciting pieces of music I've heard, it's a pure joy but you really don't want to be driving your car to it wink

    punk SYNCHRONISING punk

And for your comparison here's the version from THE KISS...

    cool SYNCHRONISING cool

...it's played with more finesse but I prefer the faster version.

    Wooow! punk punk

That all sounds fantastic. Propelling, cheerful Nyman stuff. I need it after a rather lonely first day back to work. Love it.

Thanks for the recommendations Alan and Timmer.

It's 19 years ago that The Piano was released, and so was Michael Nyman's score, who apparently made him realize he could do something different:.
    http://www.guardian.co.uk/film/2012/jul … -the-piano

In the comments I learned the famous main theme was in fact inspired by a melody that goes back a long time. There are some examples posted under the article and while it's a bit far away, you can hear it shimmering through. I didn't knew, but apparently Nyman talked about it before (Scottish hymn)

  4. It does explain why the theme is like nothing else in his music... although to some extent the oddness of the film and Jane Campion somewhat explained that too.

Yes! Although A Wild and Distant Shore and similar tracks have his stamp from other works.

  5. Definitely. It's the source melodies that -- arguably appropriately -- probably have real musical references behind them.

I guess nobody, and I mean literally nobody, saw this one coming (and if you did, please have a look at my Lotto numbers), but I'm excited as hell (even though I was originally hoping Terrence Blanchard would be taking the gig for a jazzy, noirish score).

Yep, I'm hoping for something completely new from Nyman, but even if he stays within his own comfort zone, I'm sure we can trust it at least won't be generic.

    That sucks big time!
Bach's music is vibrant and inspired.
