- Comment
Thor wrote some....well, I don't know what....heavy metal rock music video?
yeah there's some ingredient in there that i haven't tasted before. a lot of people have latched onto the heavy metal idea, but it's more than that. A completely unique feel. There's ...

- Comment
Thor wrote Films don't HAVE to be traditional and narrative. That's only the Hollywood mindset speaking. They can also be experimental, tableaux, visceral experiences, you name it. I'm looking forward to seeing it this week.
yeah of course, I should have said, ...

- Comment Mandy Loved the atmosphere, music and visuals. Reminded me a lot of Blade Runner 2049, in that each shot and scene is a living painting. Plot is fairly simplistic, which is fine, but there's a feeling at the end - at least for me - of looking for a point. Maybe that's a mistake in this type ...

- Comment Vantage Point a decent 24-ish action thriller. didn't make that much of an impression, except for Dennis Quaid's truly spectacular scowl. and alsoo.... - Comment
Steven wrote There's little generic about Sicario, and certainly doesn't exploit Mexican drug wars for its own gain. It shows it for what it is in an entertaining yet disturbing film.
I can understand why someone might view it as un-exploitative, but did you not find the John ...

- Comment The mood was definitely strong, a weird mix between dread and black comedy; I particularly liked the part where Josh Brolin pokes his head out of the hotel room and says, "What's the secret password."

- Comment Sicario Didn't like this one at all, which surprised me since I enjoyed Arrival and Blade Runner 2049 so much. This one struck me as a generic action/revenge movie that exploited the drug wars in Mexico to seem more "relevant" and "important" than it really was. Left a ...

- Comment Adaptation A movie so good it's almost depressing, because I know I'll be comparing everything I watch for the next month to it's brilliance, and finding them wanting. What a heartfelt, ingenious, original movie. Loved it.

- Comment Gladiator first time seeing this movie! very good, but it seemed at time to me cliched, and I cannot help but wonder if this is because it is indeed cliche, or because it was so influential I mistake it for a copy when it was in fact the original thing.

- Comment
Thor wrote I disagree. I think it's all highly visionary. Nothing "standard" about it at all, which is a rather bizarre claim to have for a director who never resorts to standard genre tropes.
I guess while a shootout in a building with unpredictable gravity is a ...

- Comment
Thor wrote OK. I disagree with that, as I actually think his execution is often more interesting than his premise, even though they're mostly all ambitious premises (in the case of INSOMNIA not his own, though).
I think the most prominent example would be inception, which ...

- Comment
Thor wrote MEMENTO is great (although do watch Gaspar Noë's IRREVERSIBLE for a more gruelling take with the same narative mechanism). - Comment Memento really, really good. So many movies botch a good premise with bad execution, others do their best to salvage a bad premise with good execution, Memento is one of the few that takes a brilliant idea and fulfills it's promise. - Comment the soundtrack to the first Jurassic World is one of my favorites of the 2010s, so when I cued up the fallen kingdom album tonight I expected a lot. - Comment pretentious? it was downright pulpy at times. "pretentious" would seem to indicate that the movie had nothing to back up it's aspirations, that it is only pretending to be thoughtful. I think the thought is definitely there. It's definitely not a "humans destroy stuff" movie.
