- Comment I've been going through all of Spielberg's movies, most of which I haven't seen before. Last night was Hook, which I have seen but not since I was a kid. It's a little goofy at times and the sets clearly suffer from the limitations of the time but man, Robin Williams and especially John ...

- Comment Yeah, this is rough. The Last Jedi is the better score but The Post had a better chance of winning due to the film's prestige. (Either way, probably doesn't matter. Desplat has this one in the bag.)

- Comment The Last Jedi - John Williams It's fine. I'm not the biggest fan of Williams' contemporary action writing and there's plenty of that here. Weirdly, it sounds even choppier than the norm. Could be the way the film is edited or maybe the music itself is heavily edited. Some of the returning ...

- Comment Justice League - Danny Elfman This sounds like someone installed Zimmer 2.0 over Elfman's operating software. At times, you can hear the latter's voice peaking through but most of the time, it's deeply generic, blockbuster bombast. And ungodly long.

- Comment Music from the Edge - John Corigliano This is marvelous music. Shore's effort was solid but Corigliano outmatches him in pretty much every way. The suspense and action music sounds a lot like the composer's concert work (and is excellent) but it's the beautiful use of the main theme that ...

- Comment Thor: Ragnarok - Mark Mothersbough When Mothersbough is allowed to play with his synths, this soundtrack can be a lot of fun. Unfortunately, a good chunk of the time, he's indulging in a pretty generic orchestral sound that we've heard in over a dozen of these films already. And per usual ...

- Comment Revolt - Bear McCreary One has to respect McCreary's dedication to tackling each project in unique ways. - Comment I like Music for Orchestra quite a bit. It's beautifully structured and sounds like Goldsmith all the way (especially his trademarked brass writing). Not a fan of Christus Apollo. Fireworks kinda feels lightweight after the two before it but has its charms.
