- Comment
Southall wrote Mine too. I do like Valerian a great deal but it's not quite in the same league as The Golden Compass, I don't think.
It's less thematically dense, at any rate. Are you going to write a review for it?

- Comment Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets - Alexandre Desplat I'm liking this a lot. Always enjoy hearing Desplat's detailed orchestrations. The themes are a little more elusive than I'd like but that's not unexpected given early interviews.

- Comment Deep Impact - James Horner. Getting back into Horner lately. Even the scores I didn't like as much I'm looking at in a new light with him gone. I used to think Deep Impact was just a slog to get through and the album is probably too long (like most of Horner's from this period) but a lot of ...

- Comment
Southall wrote Wanted Danny Elfman More than a bit of John Powell mixed in with lots of Elfman trademarks, this is a tremendously enjoyable action score. - Comment
But it came out of his head, so why is that not his own voice? Even if he was writing in the style of the maestro, it doesn't sound exactly like Williams either. Back then he had a grasp on themes and orchestration like the best composers have. His film scores are fine but only a handful I ...

- Comment Listening to Tchaikovsky's piano music. I'm always fascinated when a large chunk of a composer's output is virtually ignored by performers. But listening to it, you realize quickly the reason why is because it's just really boring. You can tell he wrote it strictly for the paycheck.

- Comment My biggest problem with Passengers
wasn't Pratt's character's choice, which I thought was contextualized adequately by the script. I think that anyone in that situation likely would have made the same decision, as much as it makes us uncomfortable to think about. My problem was that ...

- Comment Colossal - Bear McCreary I watched the movie last night (which I liked) but it mostly didn't change my opinion of the score, which has very strong opening and ending highlights but the middle section is a churning slog.

- Comment Yeah, there's a seventy-five minute version floating around but honestly, the promo is a perfect representation of the score. The additional cues are extraneous and get in the way. (I had a similar issue with The Rocketeer, which I also feel is better served with its original sequencing.)

- Comment Colossal - Bear McCreary Respectable. Probably not up there with 10 Cloverfield Lane (which had stronger thematic material) but the music is intelligent, as expected with this composer. The finale is especially strong.
