- discussion topic Film Scores That Won Oscars based on the whole work?
- Comment I have heard, even insider (by the guy who was a music executive at Disney at the time), opinions that what sealed the oscar for The Lion King was the score to the "Hamlet sequence", that is, the sequence where the adult Simba encounters Mufasa's ghost. I, personally, always felt that the ...

- Comment I haven't seen it, but have heard of it. Is it the one where Norris' attempts at acting actually hit some of the marks (not unlike Seagal in Above the Law)?

- Comment You don't really believe in scores that demand repeated listenings, do you? I find HGW's more restrained music to belong in that category.

- Comment Not having seen the film, I was wondering whether Burning Palms is a title referring to plant life or body parts. I just realized (especially in that context), same could be said for the Prince of Egypt cue ;)

- Comment Thought this would rock your boat. There is a certain heaviness people usually don't like about Jóhansson's work, but I happen to love it. Hence his "lightest" score (The Theory of Everything) is actually my least favorite of his.

- Comment [big]Jóhann Jóhannsson - Prisoners[/big] Dark, somehow religious (the faith of Hugh Jackman's character plays a huge part in the film and it's actually quite fascinating that this particular world was explored by the film's score), in fact for such a tense and dark film, the score ...

- Comment [big]Jóhann Jóhannsson - Arrival[/big] Yesterday it was his birthday so I elected not to listen to Dune that day, but, in respect for the man, Sicario. Today it's Arrival, which was my favorite film in the year it came out (and as the thinking man's SF film it seriously resonated ...

- Comment I think that the new score is even more firmly established in the late Romantic tradition than the Toto one (which is not argument against Toto's, of course). In a funny way, this is somewhat closer to the kind of dark gothic flow Badalamenti would bring to Lynch's work. Completely different ...

- Comment [big]Hans Zimmer - Dune[/big] Well, frustratingly enough, and I KNOW that this will be necessary to fully assess the score, the movie doesn't come out here until October 22nd, so my remarks will be based on the music apart from the film. That said, I've had numerous listens to the ...

- Comment Yes, it's a learning process, really. Certain jokes aren't "fun" anymore and at least we start questioning if they are. Remember, there is a certain systemic aspect to the tough room that Hans is talking about. And systems tend to reproduce themselves. Also, he is still a boomer.
