- Comment
Erik Woods wrote
Thor wrote NP: THE LIGHTKEEPERS (Pinar Toprak) Slow-moving and beautiful -- just what I like these days (although perhaps a bit too much 'mickey mousing' at times; lots of start/stop chord changes). Pinar hasn't really done a weak score yet, has ...

- Comment Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom It's pretty lousy. Most of its plot is ripped straight from The Lost World, the new characters are either forgettable (the villains) or annoying (the sidekicks). Chris Pratt looks stoic, Bryce Dallas Howard screams a lot. There isn't any tension or memorable ...

- Comment Hubris - John Powell Divorced from the need to write to picture and pleasing multiple filmmakers, this music shows Powell's classical influences much more clearly. It's intelligent, sometimes abrasive and frequently gorgeous. Definitely gonna need a bunch more listens to absorb it all. ...

- Comment Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom There are some career-best cues here (the end credits suite in particular) but as usual with Giacchino, he pads the soundtrack with too many suspense cues (especially in the middle). Take some of the opening cues and most of the ending ones and you'll have a ...

- Comment Yeah, I don't care for the Williams quotes either, for the most part. "Reminiscence Therapy" in particular feels very clunky. It's one thing if you reference an old theme, another when you basically take entire measures of old cues and shoehorn them in.

- Comment Solo - John Powell Basically what you'd expect from a score where John Powell meets John Williams. It's terrific. Powell's own themes aren't quite standing out to me yet but you definitely can't miss the new Han theme.

- Comment
Erik Woods wrote I don't get the love for this score. It's Silvestri on autopilot. It's rather bland and forgettable. -Erik-
Agreed. I've always felt Silvestri does his best work when given the opportunity to write strong thematic material. Since this obviously wasn't the ...

- Comment God of War - Bear McCreary Having just finished the magnificent game, I'm convinced this is one of the few masterpieces of 2018. The album is a little too long but in game, it is completely flawless, making me tear up on several occasions. Pruning the album down to about an hour makes it a ...

- Comment
Southall wrote God of War Bear McCreary There's some outstanding material on this, but the album's far too long.
It's interesting because in the game, the music is actually quite sparse. - Comment I think Silvestri's action music has increasingly homogenized over the years. I went back to Back to the Future the other day and was greatly impressed by the clocktower cue, which had all the freshness I've felt has been missing from the composer's music for ages now. (But I can only blame the ...

- Comment Ready Player One - Alan Silvestri It's okay. Will probably be able to upgrade that to "good" once I do some pruning down to maybe fifty minutes. Not as much thematic development as I was expecting based on earlier reports that the main theme is all over the score. My biggest ...
