Beasts of the Southern Wild
Dan Romer and Benh Zeitlin
" I see that I am a little piece of a big, big universe, and that makes it right! "Written by Thomas Glorieux - Review of the download only release
One of the movies earning critical acclaim in festivals around the world is Beasts of the Sounthern Wild, a dramatic fantasy movie about a girl and her father who live in a remote water surrounded place called the Bathtub. The six-year old Hushpuppy uses her unique view upon the world to survive the cruel yet necessary lessons her father bestows upon her. And through that unique look on the world, she comes in contact with beasts that no one has seen since centuries ago.
For the music, director Benh Zeitlin co wrote the upbeat score along with Dan Romer, a composer and engineer he befriended in the years he was working in a grunge band. And together they share a most remarkable score full of passion, hardship and hope. And to create a specific sound for The Bathtub and the population, they enlisted the Lost Bayou Ramblers, a Grammy-nominated local group from Pilette, Louisiana. Together they create a sound and score that will definitely make you feel alive again.
The tinkling opening of "Particles of the Universe (Heartbeats)" prepares you perfectly for the enormous passionate main theme of the movie. Basically supporting Hushpuppy's fantasy and view upon the world, it literally transports the listener to the heart and soul of a 6 year old child's fantasy. And "The Bathtub" does that with enormous energy and liveliness. This theme undergoes many changes, including a wonderful emotional one in the short but superb "I Think I Broke Something", the tranquil "End of the World" and the upbeat catchiness of "Until the World Goes Down". But it's crowning achievement arrives in "Once There Was a Hushpuppy" when the main theme delivers an even bolder sound than in track 2.
The powerful almost epic sound of "The Confrontation" shows Hushpuppy's heroic actions, followed by heartfelt emotion in "Death Bed" and unbridled excitement in "Once There Was a Hushpuppy, a cue that as said will go down as one of the finest this year. Making Beasts of the Southern Wild a wonderful soundtrack to discover, experience and enrich your afternoon or evening. Because basically you have to see it like Hushpuppy. When you're running with sparkles in your hand through a festivity of light and laughter, you rather hear soft solemn music coloring your path? Or pure excitement full of life and hope? Welcome to Hushpuppy's fantasy: that in a million years, when kids go to school, they gonna know: Once there was a Hushpuppy, and she lived with her daddy in The Bathtub.
