Game of Thrones (Season 6)

Ramin Djawadi

" Hold the flood of highlights "

Written by Thomas Glorieux - Review of the regular release

Game of Thrones succeeds in raising the bar with every season. And even if I think they didn't reach the pinnacle of season 5, somehow they came so awfully close. Several epic battles, some unbelievable twists, a couple of truly emotional deaths and a lot of vengeance and murders. Game of Thrones never stops to give you a shock here and there. And finally this epic season delivers on the musical decibels as well. I think this is the CD with the most epic music. Sadly, all this packed on one CD proves too much of a good thing. There are countless Khaleesi statements on epic mode (proving Queen Dhanaeris is on a roll this time with her dragons). Other statements of themes appear as well, Stark's theme, Castermere theme at the end of another coronation, even the Game of Thrones theme gets an epic variation in "Winter Has Come".

But by far the most magical cue is the opener of the final episode. And it's with "Light of the Seven" that Djawadi has finally shown to the world he is no longer the pupil of Hans Zimmer but a full blown composer. A composer who has matured and can now deliver suspense and subtle emotion and get away with it in pure poetry. Too bad this cue is heard in the beginning since the second part is pretty much one powerful cue after another. Speaking purely of musical cues, this is the most epic CD and a top notch excellent cue festivity. But album wise I would have organized it completely different. Too much of the music is focusing on the battles, too much of it sounds the same after a while. All the while the diversity is found at the beginning. Still it's easy to remember how Djawadi has grown in this series. And just like the series he has raised the bar considerably. Wow on all levels.

The most extensive playlist of highlights for your best of compilation. Season 6 delivers on highlights.
"Light of the Seven" is a magnificent cue. Emotional slow brooding suspense at its finest.
Dharnaeres, Stark's Castermere's theme, they all shine with powerful versions.
Some truly wonderful emotional scenes get the music they deserve ("Hold the Door", "Maester")
Besides "Hold the Door" delivers the riveting pace that makes this scene one of the most sensational endings of any season.
In my opinion the album is organized poorly.
