Hoppet

Hoppet is a film made in the tradition of coming-of-age films. A Kurdish refugee finds a home in Sweden but struggles with feelings of isolation, misunderstanding, and a traumatic past. The film presents a series of clichés; serious subjects come and go, while there are ingredients that capture the imagination of the young boy in his transition towards a hopeful future and reunion with his family, coming from two comic reliefs, almost mythical characters: a hot dog vendor and a female world champion in sports.

The original score was written by Nils Petter Molvær, a Norwegian jazz composer and trumpeter who excels in the field of Nordic jazz while also having scored a few dozen projects.

Molvær's overall music is best described as an atmospheric, ambient, and almost filmic mixture of jazz and iconic trumpet playing, often mixed with other instruments. From his jazz works, the melancholic and recognizable sound design usually translates well into scoring a film.

In approaching the content of Hoppet, Molvaer focuses on the warmth and melancholy of the boy's circumstances, using idiosyncratic sound design, textural layers, trumpet playing, percussion, guitar, and the voice of Nizamettin Ariç. For this score, he broke with a variety of regular musicians, even though Eivind Aarset returns playing the guitar. As on some of his jazz albums, there are some issues with the use of (electronic) percussion, which does not fare that well. However, the score for Hoppet is exemplary of someone who levels between different kinds of formats and genres but remains faithful to his roots and supports the film well. In describing the merits of the score, it carries a 'Karaindrou-Preisner-ECM' signature of quality.

A compilation, six tracks of Hoppet, was released alongside several cues for the French film Edy, a non-score track and a long track for the Swedish film Frosset hjerte (Frozen Hear), united on the 2006 album Re-Vision. It captures the quality of Molvær well. At the time, the CD release included a free digital download voucher for the score to Edy score through Molvær' website.
