" In James Horner Country "

Written by Thomas Glorieux - Review of the regular release

In Country is one of those releases of James Horner that never received any attention, not until the filmmusic of today started to show why it was important to go back to the birth of good film music. Let me just rectify by saying that In Country is not a classic, but definitely a reminder that even the smallest scores had class. You don't hear music like this anymore, the ones soaked in emotion and brought forward by delicateness and simply ... themes. Okay it are themes and melodies that tend to have that "where did I hear that before" attitude. But In Country nevertheless shows us listeners it's not okay to dwell on that for too long, considering the crud of today makes us yearn for "that" music even more.

In Country mixes delicate piano music (often reminding us of Field of Dreams) with occasional harsh music, music that brings back the attacking aggressiveness of the shakuhachi ("In Country"). But sometimes it also delivers pure emotion, like the opening and closing track. And these are the ones to remember. Especially the last "Fallen Friends" when it starts to erupt with some lovely orchestral emotion (and making it sound almost like The Land Before Time). In Country is good and soft James Horner material, and in a time you seem to lack so much in filmmusic, it will become a richer experience than you probably imagined.

Lovely soft score, delivering soft but strong emotion.
In the likes of Field of Dreams, and capturing moments you'll link to Apollo 13 and The Land Before Time.
Accept the similarities and you'll do fine.
