Jip van den Toorn: Boekhouder is a short 2026 documentary directed by Stephane Kaas. It provides an insight into the world of renowned Dutch cartoonist Jip van den Toorn.
Peter Vandrie is a musician, singer-songwriter, and composer, continuously channelling between living and working in the Netherlands and Israel.
The length of this short documentary, 24 minutes, and its content is mostly well-supported by an original score. Even though the musical palette is small, including bass guitar, drums, a woodwind, a cappella vocals, and some further musical design, the result is interesting, with a series of very short cues. There are a few decent enough short cues supporting the sense of what she does and what she feels, especially in the opening cue. Towards the end, underscoring one of van der Toorn's new projects, the longest track, using drums and electric guitar, is serviceable but does not exceed functionality.
What strikes a special chord is how the composer figured out a means to provide some slightly ironic musical comments on the drawings by van der Toorn. Most of the time, they receive short a cappella vocal phrases in the vein of umbah or bombombom, sometimes supported by a short woodwind phrase or by sound design. There is also a slightly more extended hallucinatory and engaging variation regarding a serious news item segueing into her drawing through a mixture of a traces of a voice and musical design. They are all outstanding and give colour to the documentary.
The music remains unreleased.
