Knowing

Marco Beltrami

" Know this, it's known that Knowing packs a hell of a climax "

Written by Thomas Glorieux - Review of the regular release

Alex Proyas has delivered his fair share of fan favorites over the years. From the fan favorite The Crow to the cult classic Dark City to the spectacular I, Robot, Proyas has surely proven his worth. And so he has done again in 2009 when he gave us a climax unlike no other in Knowing, a most intense science fiction picture starring Nicholas Cage. For the musical choice, Proyas continued his path with the composer that got the job done in I, Robot, namely Marco Beltrami. And considering dark tense science fiction scores are right up his alley (so is Trevor Jones), Knowing is a perfect match inside the film. On disc, it's a waiting game, waiting until the climax of the movie and thereby score.

The ominous "Main Titles", the quirky dangerous rhythm of "Door Jam" and the father / son theme in "John and Caleb" don't deliver a riveting opening, and just occasionally do things change for the better. In the on edge "New York", the horrific "Moose on the Loose" or the atonal "Loudmouth" Beltrami occasionally unleashes his devils. But for most of the time, it's mostly moody and dark ("It's the Sun", "Trailer Music" etc etc).

It's only at the absolute end that Knowing totally explodes with its unbelievable climax. First we have the dramatic cello tone in "Revelations", later the unbelievable arrival in "Shock and Aww", followed by the crowning jewel of Knowing, "Caleb Leaves" that lets the father / son theme grow towards extreme proportions. The same can be said about the climatic "Roll Over Beethoven" and the spine tingling send off in "New World Round" (that will raise a few hairs in the process) and the terrific fanfare laden cue "Who Wants an Apple?"

Knowing is a good film score, at least in the sense it absolutely delivers you what the movie promises. For most of the time, Knowing takes you on a quest for the truth, unknowingly guiding you towards a climax many didn't see coming at all. Thereby Marco Beltrami's score follows that quest with the gloomiest sense and the tightest rhythm. At times on edge, at times mysterious, at times over conquering, Knowing is a soundtrack for a specific moment and mood in your day, but it sure gets the job done no matter what, once Beltrami gives us a climax to be reckoned with. So know this, the long build up really goes to something.
