La Misma Sangre (My Own Blood, 2026) is a Mexican social documentary directed by Ángel Linares. After her sister's murder, Norma Mesino takes the helm of the Peasant Organization of the Southern Sierra, a group that for 30 years has been fighting for the human rights of peasants living in one of the poorest and most violent regions of Mexico. She carries the weight of a surname synonymous with struggle and resistance, marked by the Aigües Blanques massacre, imprisonments, assassinations, and disappearances, while in her daily life she continues her almost invisible work to overcome the atmosphere of hostility and impunity that surrounds her, thus fulfilling what seems to be her manifest destiny.

As the documentary levels between the harshness of the past and current-day reality, it's also about a sense of solace, resistance, hope, and justice, as reflected in the original score by Venezuelan-born composer Nascuy Linares, now residing in Spain. The music uses emotional, but mostly slow, acoustic guitar plucking and a series of repetitive phrases for the same instruments alongside ticking sounds and a series of electronics, often quite harsh, atmospheric and reverberating, crafting a very deep, brooding experience. It is not until the very end of the score - "Final Guerrero" – that the melancholic guitar plucking reaches an almost joyous rhythmic sense, but as it progresses, small disturbing sounds resurface as the cue concludes.

Nascuy Linares' score for La Misma Sangre is a striking example of how to provide a regional and semi-amiable feel, but more so, how to craft a powerful, unsettling atmosphere. It also adds yet another chapter to the composers' projects that tell something interesting about the conditions in South America, often met with extremely well-written original music. The music is available digitally through Plaza Mayor Company, which has by now released a significant amount of scores by this fine composer.
