Mac and Me

Alan Silvestri

" Mac, don't phone me at all "

Written by Thomas Glorieux - Review of the limited release

I gotta hand it to Quartet Records, they often come with surprising releases. And Mac and Me is a surprise considering I'm supposed to be a bit of an Alan Silvestri fan, yet I didn't know it at all. Then again it's not that surprising if you see the ludicrous photos of the film. An E.T. knock off and a bad one at that. I suppose the era let loose everything back then. Luckily the music is up to par. At least in the fun department. Alan Silvestri (fresh of his success of Back to the Future and Predator) unleashes a fun mix of endearing themes, playful creativeness and pleasurable bounciness, enough to convince you the music at least isn't that silly at all. Even the song version at the end is do-able.

Of course, this is not E.T., but it's charming when it needs to be, uplifting when it has to be and energetic when it ought to be. The combination of the bouncy MAC theme and the friendship theme is downright lovely in "Overture", and you'll specially think of The Croods when you hear it. The evil theme of Predator will wander through your mind too in "Mac Escapes", "Mac Trapped in Vac" and "They're not Dangerous", and it's fun to hear it in another context. But the part that dominates the album the most is either Silvestri's typical yet creative writing ("New Home", "Family Photo", ...), or the soft dreamy theme ("She's Alive" and "Raising the Dead") that truly listens enchanting. Mac and Me is a small little surprise for even the most devoted fan of Silvestri. I didn't expect something this endearing, and the fun themes and Silvestri's typical background material is enough to convince me of its charm. Unfortunately for most the charm is already sold out.

Good old 80's charm.
Fun themes, creative writing, a bit of everything for everyone.
The movie looks so stupid, I can't imagine seeing it to hear the music in context.
