" It levels in between happy, slightly quirky moments, sometimes borderline decrepit, and several truly endearing moments. "Written by Joep de Bruijn - Review of the regular release
Pazuru Boburu (Puzzle Bobble, Bust-A-Move) developed by Taito and consecutived by them in collaboration with Arc System for Pazuru Boburu Eburibaburu! (Puzzle Bobble Everybubble!,2023) is one of the finest puzzle game series.
In the first video game, the music was largely the same, with some additional pieces for bosses. As the series continued and incorporated many unfortunate story elements and dialogue, the amount of original score increased, as did technical advances, though not so much in terms of composition.
The ported release of Pazuru Boburu Eburibaburu! (Puzzle Bobble Everybubble!) on Steam in 2026 adds several new features while retaining almost all of the original elements. This is also true of the music, which was composed by Shohei Tsuchiya of Zantata in calibration with the heritage of Kazuko Umino (Karu), who left Zantata when Tao was acquired by Square Enix.
The original score uses pop, lounge, and jazz elements but also a lot of acoustic and orchestral ingredients while utilising electronics. It levels in between happy, slightly quirky moments, sometimes borderline decrepit, and several truly endearing moments. The quirky, borderline music comes out best in cues such as Shopping District, while rural, slower music is driven by wonderful, endearing strings in a cue such as Setting off. It often recalls the wild, diverse personality a random Japanese score to an animated project can withhold.
While this game's music is much more contemporary in a wider perspective than at the beginning, there is still, as said, a lot of music technically levelling in between the old and new sounds, approach and referential new disguises of the older music, retaining much of its uncomplex, nonetheless alluring and catchy, repetitive appeal.
As Puzzle Bobble Everybubble! offers a mode presented as a crossover – this was not the first – with Taito's classic 1978 Space Invaders, some sound effects, and music written for the contemporary revivals developed by Taito are inherently fused.
The game also offers a music player as an extra.
Conversely, for each of their games, I much prefer to experience the full game, including its sound effects and music. Once I feel I am sufficiently attuned, however, I mute the music and play meditative film or classical music instead. In doing so, a part of the Japanese cuteness retained through the wider audio aspect is lost; not the music but the sound effects. These effects cannot be amalgamated with the vastly different music while playing the game.
