Rudy

Jerry Goldsmith

" Rudy, Rudy, Rudy, Rudy, ... "

Written by Thomas Glorieux - Review of the regular release

Rudy is a short but inspired work of Jerry Goldsmith. A film based on the short career of football player Daniel Eugene "Rudy" Ruettiger (Ruettiger was one of two players in Notre Dame history to ever be carried off the field by his teammates), it inspired Jerry Goldsmith once again to greatness as he delivered one of his more stirring themes. The lovely way it opens the score, and the stirring way it closes it. Rudy is once again one of those Jerry Goldsmith scores that ridicules most of today's music. I often wonder why that is, considering the only problem Rudy has is perhaps diversity. Relying heavily on the 2 themes (the Rudy theme and the Notre Dame theme), it nonetheless offers excitement and drama, drama which is definitely found in one of Jerry's biggest climaxes (again saying a lot) namely "The Final Game". Excitement in the form of The Notre Dame theme, and how it fuels Rudy's determination and passion ("Back on the Field", "Tryouts" and "Take Us Out"). In general, Rudy is a short but wonderful release. I always thought this release was enough, and so I thought the deluxe treatment offering more music of Varèse sounded dumb. I've never even given it a chance because I know the film. It doesn't offer a unique moment of diversity. No this selection proves that less is often great enough too. Once again a dramatic highlight of Jerry Goldsmith capabilities, and another stirring sports score that made tears appear whilst experiencing it.

Another main theme for the books. Stirring and emotional stuff from the master.
The Notre Dame is equally captivating, a bold and noble heroic theme.
"The Final Game", need I say more? Goosebumps in riveting Goldsmith style.
Perhaps a lack of diversity shows the lack of some difference throughout the score.
