Saving Mr. Banks
Thomas Newman
" Light but not memorable "Written by Thomas Glorieux - Review of the regular release
The Disney film Saving Mr. Banks looks like a fun film to see one Saturday afternoon. Charming and heartwarming. Enter Thomas Newman to deliver that. Well not exactly. It's Thomas doing what he does easiest, not Thomas doing what he does best. One way or another this movie somehow was perfect to throw some fairy dust to it and make it soar. Now it flies gently without resorting to big music. It's not Meet Joe Black, it's Wall-E but lighter. At one end you can throw several cues to Wall-E and nobody would know the difference. At another end, Wall-E had much more highlights. Personally I blame the time it's getting. I mean 31 tracks for 45 minutes, that's not a lot of development. But just like Finding Nemo and the many that followed it, Thomas Newman does a lot with the little he has. It's lovely, breezy and light. Occasionally even bouncy or charming. But hasn't it been done before? Of course it has and sometimes it's hard to tell one from the other. There isn't a specific theme that would link it to Saving Mr. Banks and not another Thomas Newman score. Too bad because one does pass the time rather easily. It just does not meet the standards one places with Thomas Newman once he dazzles us again with his flair.
Lovely when needed, mysterious when required. Saving Mr. Banks brings what Thomas is known for.
There are moments that you can listen to again and again ("Travers Goff", "Saving Mr. Banks (End Title)"
Newman brings sweetness but forgets to make it memorable. Or perhaps it wasn't demanded?
The shortest track ever? 6 Seconds!
Dialogue, it remains more often than not a distraction.
