Star Trek V: The Final Frontier
Jerry Goldsmith
" What has Goldsmith's fascination got to do with that spaceship? "Written by Thomas Glorieux - Review of the regular release
Star Trek V (the movie) hasn't got the best reputation. But it does hold it own thanks to the devoted trekkies. And I'm betting a lot has to do with the cast and the music it's offering. After all, Goldsmith and Horner understood the universe so well, both of them heightened the movies level with their own gift for adventure. Star Trek V: The Final Frontier is perhaps unique in Goldsmith's Star Trek career because of one vital strength. The themes. With that I don't specifically mean the theme of Star Trek, but the numerous themes that weave through it. A new friendship theme, a returning Klingon theme, a wonderful frontier theme and a mysterious God theme. All delivering and weaving through one another like it was just a piece of cake. Composers of today, again for the so maniest time take notice. Even if this isn't Goldsmith best, it has riches you possibly can't even begin to imagine if you don't pay attention to it.
The Poltergeist mystery in "An Angry God", the beautiful Klingon theme (yes you heard it, I said beautiful) in the wonderful "A Busy Man", the combination of themes in "Approaching Nimbus III", Goldsmith's own action stamp in "Open the Gates". And even if this expanded treatment is covering too much music now, several new additions are vital to the experience and will definitely make it on your own playlist mix. Again Stark Trek V: The Final Frontier is not the best Trek score, and definitely not the best Goldsmith soundtrack. But it has something, like the character Sybok. Sybok's character is actually quite interesting, and the way Goldsmith handles the more subtle mystery in him is like a breath of fresh air for the Trek universe. It's just important now how to present all this material, as it's perhaps a bit too much.
The strength of Star Trek V: themes! An abundance of themes!
themes like the frontier theme, the mountain (main) theme or the return of the Klingon theme.
Goldsmith's attention to detail is astounding. He even makes the Klingon theme sound so goddamn beautiful in "A Busy Man".
Perhaps an issue for me, but it's a bit too long now. Especially in the first part.
