In 2024, the long-running German crime series comes with a new chapter called Tatort: Was Bleibt. Their original music has always been rewarding, especially in the last years with a series of wonderful efforts for the TV movies scored by composers such as Martina Eisenreich, Christoph Blaser and now Florian Tessloff.
Tatort: Was Bleibt is defined by a detective being confronted with his past in order to solve a murder, aided by a visceral neo-noir cinematography, which altogether formed the basis for the score by Tessloff. He translated this opaque emotional discernment and aesthetic neo noirish form, creating a vigorously fluid hybrid-approach of orchestral elements performed by NDR Radio Philharmonic Orchestra and electronic elements.
While watching Was Bleibt, and hearing the music progress, there is some generic writing, not just in the electronic department, but the full hybrid at display. But luckily, it is mostly a memorable musical effort. There is a strong eerie theme, which comes and goes in variations using instruments such as high-pitched strings, synthesizers and a processed female voice in cues such as Bildstedt and the wonderful finale Wer Bin Ich. It is arguably the most illustrative thing to allude to the neo-noirish mysterioza and opaque emotional content in an already strong overall effort by Florian Tessloff.
