" The Great Darren Fung Odyssey "

Written by Thomas Glorieux - Review of the download only release

Though the name Darren Fung passed by a couple times throughout the years, it's the first score I ever heard of him. But The Great Human Odyssey is surely an experience that deserves that first attempt. Melodic, thematic and having enough emotional moments to melt the coldest heart for a few seconds. Either through wonderful piano melodies, vocal moments or orchestral encores, the score has enough of them for everyone. Okay, it's all in the tested area for the die hard listener. But what separates it from the average works is basically the themes and melodies that weave through one another. And more than ever the feeling of not being afraid to show some kind of emotion.

Mostly I'm listening to background material these days, stuff that's there to support and not over-conquer. So, even if The Great Human Odyssey isn't that epic, it has enough wow moments for the die hard listeners amongst us. If you're of course into that kind of thing. The returning piano melody ("Something Remarkable", "Modern Humans", "The Road Less Traveled", "Jebel Faya") is the stuff I adore. His powerful melodic (choral) moments in "The Kelp Forest", "Evolution of Adaptability", "Remarkable Adaptations", "The Hokule'a Sets Sail" and its crowning achievement (I kid you not) "Humans Underwater" show incredible power. I mean documentaries that test the human spirit should also test the musical mind, and this kind of music is just my cup of tea. It's easy to appreciate, shows enough musical ingenuity and is powerful and light at the right moments. Darren Fung surely surprised me here and it's one of those hidden treasures of 2015.

Lovely score, melodic and it has truly lovely ingenuity.
The choir does its work.
Wow, the last minutes of 'Humans Underwater' is truly magnificent. Going from lonely piano to full orchestral / choral magic.
