The Space Between Us

Andrew Lockington

" It's rather interesting! "

Written by Thomas Glorieux - Review of the regular release

Andrew Lockington is slowly making a name for himself. With the blockbusters of Journey 2 and San Andreas already on his resume, it's vital to build other relationships with other directors as well. For The Space Between Us he tackled the space genre, and the result is quite decent. At one end, the result is mysterious, soft, ethereal, moody (reason why Thomas Newman and his quirky ideas come to mind). At another end, the score is actually quite interesting. It's got enough detail, it's got subtle emotion and when needs be, it's got potency. It's not weird most people immediately embrace the cue "Biplane" (a track that dares to break the boundaries and go for a powerful build up and fanfare of the drama theme). That rarely happens after that, even though there's some urgency and potency remaining in "Ocean" and "Race to Save Gardner". The final track gives a nice closure. All in all The Space Between Us lacks greatness, but in some ways it's quite interesting and occasionally very rewarding. Too bad it focuses too much on the eerie parts, and not on the stuff that makes it great. Still, a worthy try for several tracks.

Concerning detail and inventiveness, Lockington more than delivers.
The cue "Biplane" dares to break the boundaries and go for powerful development of its fragile theme.
Yes, the song "Shine a Light" that was featured in the trailer is here, and I LIKE it!
Has lots of eerie music, functional but not always interesting.
