Wind

Basil Poledouris

" Basil loves sailing, now we all love sailing because of Basil "

Written by Thomas Glorieux - Review of the regular release

In a whisper he captures the most emotional side of nature. Basil Poledouris may have been a great composer, and he may have had a soft spot for sailing, combining the two in a musical environment is still something to accomplish nonetheless. And as we all know, only the best of the best can do it, the ones that compose film music from their heart, making the melody such an enchanting piece that it touches the heaven at any standard. I can only say that this piece of music, Wind must be a terrific score to listen to when you're sailing, when you witness the will of the water, combined with a summer breeze, or a mother storm of epic proportions.

Either way, The Perfect Storm is your bet for the second circumstance, Wind undoubtedly captures the first in all its glory. In The Hunt for Red October he controlled the sea with a suspenseful mood, a thrill. Free Willy captured the innocence and the beauty of the creatures living in the water (and has a lot in common with Wind), but Wind has the spirituality, the feel and the environment of a place where your imagination takes a rest, where you live in a world surrounded by beauty, a relaxing place of paradise. And Basil Poledouris all captures it in one way or another.

The calm, relaxing breeze in the first track "Prologue" probably describes it all. If you're not relaxed then, put yourself to sleep. It presents a very relaxing version of the main theme. Sailing in competition offers the excitement with the energetic feel of a sailboat touching the water, and "The Dinghy Race" and the orchestral "Windward Work" offer the pure thrill of sailing. Basil also captures the enchanting melody of winning and losing, especially in the more tense first part of "Downwind".

Due to the fact that Basil used a lot of smaller synthesizer pieces, the music begins to sound at times similar to someone else. For instance Hans Zimmer fans will get a vibe in "The Break-Up" while others will love the piano accompaniment in the beautiful "Love in the Sewer". In fact, all moments encompass the true feel of the movie and the circumstances, and it is best described as a score that generates a response. It feels the way you would suspect it.

"Defeat" is light, yet capturing a heavy burden, "Windward Work" is uplifting and exciting, "The Glider" is typical Poledouris loveliness, "Contest" will remind people of the stuff Philip Glass provided for The Truman Show and a lovely breezy main theme spells out love in "The Bike Ride". Meaning Basil describes his own emotions in pure musical language.

At the end, Basil offers us the thrill of sailing through the water with the two highlights "Dead Air" and "Winning". Competitive but beautiful, perfect yet a featherlight accompaniment, both tracks are very memorable. Especially "Dead Air" is great. It starts calm and subdued, nothing happens until the wind starts blowing again and the race becomes the challenging contest it had to be from the start. The climax then arrives in the rousing "Winning".

The song at the end (which is only discovered on the Japanese version) is 5 minutes long and uses the main theme as cornerstone.

Wind was at a specific time a hard to get score, but now it has been released alongside A Whale for the Killing in the shape of a limited edition that is still available. And it is yet another highly enjoyable score from the late Poledouris. Sound and material (small intimate piano pieces, eclectic synthesizer parts and orchestral racing thunderstorms) are perfect because they add the special feeling of gliding through the water, meaning they bring the glory of Basil Poledouris' score to life. In the end they make Wind one of those memorable experiences.
