    Never Let Me Go - Rachel Portman

    Thanks to those who recommended this. It's instantly become my favourite Portman score. Very beautiful, strong emotion, very moving music.

    Enchanting and wonderful music for a remarkable film! At only 31 minutes, this is a superb listen, it's been way too long and in the past I never gave this score the credit it deserves.


    Just finished up listening to this, it's brilliantly melodic and shamelessly emotional music, I love it and I haven't listened to it in years. That's one of my favourite things about this forum and this thread in particular, when it inspires me to pull off the shelf and listen to a terrific cd that's been gathering dust for too long!

    I'm undecided about this score, on the one hand it's very nice to listen to, on the other hand it's rather unmemorable.

    This was just magnificent in the film, too. I wish Newman could score a dramatic film again, he was so good at it.

    Cherry 2000 - Basil Poledouris

    Another disappointment on the day, after my rather high expectations after reading several reviews highly praising it, the score didn't really deliver on my expectations. Basil's done better westerns than this.

    It's not bad but I wonder what John Powell would have done (considering the subject matter).

    I've run into a streak of mediocre lately with these disappointing scores:

    -The Ghost and the Darkness (Jerry Goldsmith)

    WP: Independence Day (Complete) - David Arnold

    I've been in the mood for grand, pure orchestral scores lately and this one is a real favourite when it comes to that category. The rousing main theme, especially in the End Credits, so apty captures the spirit of heroism.

    -The Boy Who Could Fly (Bruce Broughton) <-- You are off your rocker, my friend! Bloody brilliant score with an ifectious and highly memorable main theme!
    -Notes on a Scandal (Philip Glass) <-- Not a huge fan of Glass.
    -I Want to be a Shellfish (Joe Hisaishi) <-- Hisaishi rarely writes anything bad and this isn't one of them.
    -The Ghost and the Darkness (Jerry Goldsmith) <-- Great score that transports you to Africa and has a definite emotional backbone!

  5. A bit of a mixed bag this afternoon. Listening to a few tracks from A.R. Rahman's score for 127 Hours - I like the emphasis on guitar he uses - and a couple of scores from Les Baxter: Goliath and The Barbarians and Black Sunday.

    I'm really liking the horror sound of Black Sunday (aka Revenge of The Vampire).

    I absolutely fell in love with it once it was released. Heartfelt, mesmerizing and melancholic. It fits the movie, imo and elevates it but it's a problematic film, imo. Many people thought the music wasn't suitable for the movie, for what i remember.

    And what's wrong with the themes? They're fiendishly memorable... That should be enough to like em no?
