I love Karaoke, as I believe I've said before, but that's because I like to sing in general.

I'm working my way through karaoke videos on youtube to "expand" my repertoire, and I've got a pretty good list of songs I can perform decently now. Several of them are film music-related (especially Disney songs).

I know I'm pretty much alone in my love of the ol' karaoke, but I wanted to know if you have any recommendations of songs that I could try my hands on? Be aware that I like the big "anthem"-type songs, but I also like straightforward rock'n'roll (I've got Seger's "Old Time Rock and Roll" down to a tee, for example).
    I am extremely serious.

I love karaoke too. I can't sing particularly well but I love singing - especially 80s power ballads. I've found the easiest ones to do well tend to be songs made famous by Sinatra and his ilk, which often have a very narrow vocal range.
  1. Never done karaoke. And I don't think that I ever will.

I think those are the very songs where people come unstuck, I've heard some appalling decimations of favourite songs by the likes of Sinatra, Martin etc.

On the other hand they are possibly the easiest to do in the pub singer stylee.

By now, I have a repertoire of about 50 songs that I know pretty well, but I'm always on the lookout for more to add. First and foremost, I'm looking for anthem-like songs in minor mode -- could be from film, musicals, power ballads, symphonic rock, you name it.

Does anyone have any suggestions? This is my "repertoire" so far based on the songs' availability as karaoke videos on youtube:

    aladdin - 'arabian nights'
    aladdin - 'one jump ahead'
aladdin - 'a whole new world'
hunchback of notre dame - 'hellfire'
beauty and the beast - 'tale as old as time'
beauty and the beast - 'be our guest'
hercules - 'i can go the distance'
pocahontas - 'colors of the wind'
the lion king - 'circle of life'
the lion king - 'can you feel the love tonight?'
the lion king - 'he lives in you'
    the lion king - 'shadowlands'
the lion king - 'endless night'
the lion king - 'i wanna be a mighty king'
mulan - 'i'll make a man out of you'
the jungle book - 'the bare necessities'
the nightmare before christmas - 'this is halloween'
the nightmare before christmas - 'the oogie boogie song'
the nightmare before christmas - 'what's this?'
little shop of horrors - 'suddenly seymour'
elton john - 'goodbye yellow brick road'
    elton john - 'your song'
    10cc - 'dreadlock holiday'
    supertramp - 'the logical song'
    supertramp - 'school'
    pink floyd - 'high hopes'
pink floyd - 'learning to fly'
    pink floyd - 'comfortably numb'
alan parsons - 'eye in the sky'
alan parsons - 'don't answer me'
alan parsons - 'games people play'
alan parsons - 'silence and i'
alan parsons - 'old and wise'
alan parsons - 'what goes up'
peter cetera - 'glory of love'
    the beach boys - 'kokomo'
peter seger - 'old time rock and roll'
annie lennox - 'into the west'
    chess - 'anthem'
josh groban - 'you raise me up'
    roxette - 'the look'
mask of zorro - 'i want to spend my lifetime loving you'
the animals - 'house of the rising sun'
moody blues - 'nights in white satin'
christmas - 'o helga natt' ('o holy night')
the everly brothers/a-ha - 'crying in the rain'
cat stevens - 'morning has broken'
simon & garfunkel - 'bridge over troubled water'

No, but there's one with the instrumental version (a pretty good one too, by karaoke standards):

And then I open a different window with the lyrics from another site. Same goes for a couple of other songs on there.

Lots and lots of Disney songs there that I've now nailed for future performances. Maybe you could recommend some to me?

Thor, what kind of recommendations do you want? Something singable for a male singer and instrumental version is available (official or youtube)? But yeah I see some female singing in your list.

I don't sing, except for humming and mumbling lyrics in shower room. biggrin So I'm not sure how difficult or easy to sing those songs, and probably not all of them are "anthem-like", but here are some that came to my mind... from lessor-known Disney.
(Lesser-known, so it's hard to find instrumental version.)

Look Through My Eyes - Phil Collins / Brother Bear

Instrumental (bad quality. maybe DVD rip?) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dVfVV-pBcDc

Strangers Like Me - Phil Collins / Tarzan
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z4WinH7ZrDI
Instrumental (DVD rip from non-English version?) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=691DO7vmMsc

Once Upon A Time In New York City - Huey Lewis (Lyrics by Howard Ashman) / Oliver & Company
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fQnaJsbtAIc

And if you don't mind about female vocals...
Little Patch of Heaven - Alan Menken / Home On The Range

Barking At The Moon - Jenny Lewis / BOLT
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v5v0W9bvtfQ
    Instrumental http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h0O5UmZJw8A

And if you can chorus alone...
Goodbye So Soon - Henry Mancini / Great Mouse Detective

And if you can sing in Hawaiian...
He Mele No Lilo - Mark Keali'i Ho'omalu & Alan Silvestri - Lilo & Stitch

Yes, preferably with an available backing track on Youtube (but I also have Spotify at my disposal).

Male singer is best, but as you can see I also sing duets (male parts) and even the occasional female song ("Colours of the Wind"). Yeah, yeah....pretty gay, I know, but as long as the song is good....

Not sure about Spotify, but Disney has released some "Disney's Karaoke Series" on CD and also US iTunes.
Also many Broadway musicals are available as instrumental tracks (on CD or iTunes), for the purpose of performance rather than karaoke, I think.

Ha, ha.....well, that was a little too over-the-top for my taste. I love to sing a song like "Colours of the Wind" (it's not my fault it's written for a female lead), but in my regular tenor voice.

I've discovered a new song that is RIGHT up my alley from a karaoke viewpoint, and it's the Batt/Garfunkel song "Bright Eyes" from the animated film WATERSHIP DOWN. I've heard it before, but rediscovered it recently when I played the soundtrack again in preparation of my 'female film composers' episode of Celluloid Tunes.

God, it's beautiful. Some odd chord changes here and there that still requires a bit of practice.

I wish they'd release the film version which is different ( and better IMO ). One of my very favourite scores for an animated movie ( I just love the movie too, I'm a sucker and will watch it every time it's on TV ), in fact it may well be my # 1 favourite.
