Nice review. However, you should have included the bonus score tracks that were released on the website. But it wouldn't flow with the album so well.

But those aren't on the soundtrack album, which is what Thomas reviewed.

  3. They do, actually. In Poland Zimmer is the most recognizable name, some people heard it. If they don't know the movie, I give them Gladiator as an example and they almost unanimously say "Right, great music". He *is* popular, want it or not.

  7. Hans Zimmer himself does NOT confirm the Superman reboot. He says he never even *talked* to Zack Snyder in his life.

Look at what he says about John Williams's theme:

  8. Well, contrary to many other countries (like ours) you have very classic names when it comes to film music. Like John Barry, whose at least two themes belong to the most recognizable in the world, so in that manner, yeah Barry must be in England more famous than Hans.

Kilar, while very renowned, isn't famous for instantly hummable material becoming immediate cultural phenomena. Neither is Michal Lorenc (whose piece from one score was heavily featured after our President got killed in the plane crash) or anyone else for that matter, except some series themes.

Hans was asked in an interview about approaching new Superman and what he said wasn't saying "I will score it like that", but rather as a recommendation to anyone else. Hans also said that he wouldn't work with Spielberg if Williams couldn't, just because he doesn't want to go in his footsteps. Even if Spielberg expressed his will to offer him that in that case (be it even a year off for Williams)

Zimmer: Right! John Williams, the greatest living composer -- full stop. And that happens to be one of his greatest themes. So no. And I’m not thinking of rewriting Beethoven’s ninth either. It just sounds like a thankless task, you know? So that’s unequivocally a no. I have never spoken with Zack Snyder.

Some may disagree but if Williams, for whatever reason, didn't/couldn't work for Spielberg then for me the most obvious choice would be James Horner.

  10. Spielberg may disagree biggrin even though he hired Horner for many of his produced movies (Mask of Zorro for example). Funnily enough, Horner was very high on the list to get hired for Jurassic Park, but Williams himself recommended Don Davis, so he didn't get the gig.

Spielberg has been a huge fan of Zimmer since Crimson Tide, so when Spielberg created Dreamworks Pictures, Hans got the job of the Music Executive for the studio (which featured hiring Powell and Harry Gregson-Williams for the first comedy animations there, even pushing Julian Nott out of Chicken Run, so they get the gig, this of course effectively started Powell's career in film music, Gregson-Williams's not as much, because he was working on his own earlier; of course when Andrew Adamson got his first live action movie, he went with his Shrek composer, so Gregson-Williams was hired for the first Narnia)

He does, he's a huge fan of Golden Age and Jerry Goldsmith, not to mention Williams (Spielberg seems to have musical education himself), but maybe he's simply open to new stuff? Crimson Tide happens to be one of Hans's best scores in film and he could have gotten the soundtrack because of a good association with its work in film, then he liked the album (the fact that he managed to listen to the *whole* thing, with THAT release is already commendable). That happens.

Proper use of parentheses (and I'm not talking about single ones (slightly too uncomplicated as it won't allow for embedding of less-than-singular trains of thought or sidesteps essential to the thought at hand, while not important enough to warrant their own paragraph) but the many-layered us, together with semi-colons: an underappreciated art form indeed!) is less and less something that is employed on an enjoyably frequent basis; it is regrettable that ever since the days of Caesar the old three-page paragraph is something of the past (in honour of which I am (off on a tangent so askew it's nigh extending into the sixth dimension) thoroughly enjoying John Scott's Cleopatra right now).

    Oh heavens.
